"What no one has brought up here is that do-it-yourself ipod battery replacement VOIDS the ipod warranty. Feh."
The warrantee is 12 months. If the battery lasts 18 months, the warranty is over. If it fails within the warranty period, Apple will replace it for free. You made a silly statement.
Not very good at math, are you?
The warranty is a year. The batteries last 18 months or longer.
That is exctly what I had. It was sweet, at the time. I had the huge box in back...to put my RS-232 card and some other ridiculous stuff. I remember loading in adventure games via cassete tape (wow).
I'll bet trash sha...err radio shack has a replacement for it !
It's only a one year warranty. By the time the battery wears out, there's no warranty to void.
If ya think this is bad wait for the Toyota or Honda Hybrid owners angst, anguish and attitude over battery replacement in X number of years......
I don't know! I got the protection thing because I am always dropping things in garbage disposals, etc. Mine is a 40 gig one. I thought it was too big but I am now up to 20 and still swapping music. I have it on right now, hooked up to my stereo and it is just wonderfu. You can rate the songs and I am playing my 5 star playlist. I don't take it out much, I don't like the sound with just headphones. Hubby tells me there is some sort of thing to hook onto it to make the sound better. And now I want wireless headphones.
Prepare youself, it is like adopting a baby, you keep wanting accessories!!
"Seriously, consider the hundreds of thousands of ditsy college Ipod users and generally technically inept people in th world"
Well if your talking about all the liberal students at these schools then I might have to agree with you on that. Of course I talk to sales clerks all day trying to run their store register systems and they might have a problem with it as well. Point well taken. LOL
Definitely
I warned you about the hysteria. Pod users don't want to hear about Apple's problem with using proprietary firmware and batteries. Apple wants to make people jump through hoops before they can have unfettered use of the pod and there are plenty of people that like jumping through them. It's a fascinating sub-culture this Pod sub-culture.
Or bigger. Or better. I loaded every picture I've ever taken of my daughter (even when she was still in the womb) on my color iPod.
I'm still waiting for someone to ask me if I have a picture of her.
Are you possibly mistaking my reply for someone else's?
My entire reply was "Yes, it's been years, but I believe there are alternatives available that better meet my needs, at FAR lower prices. Sorry, but it's not going to happen."
I didn't think that was insulting, nor was it meant to be.
Thank you so much for the site. My iPod battery just went dead on me and I didn't want to spend $99 and send it to Apple. The battery is only $29 if you want to install it yourself. That's quite a savings!!
Thanks a bunch.
To be completely fair, how many of these same people are capable of replacing the battery in their car? Some barely manage to drop fresh AAs in the TV remote when it stops working.
Batteries are like any other object - they have a limited lifespan and eventually have to be replaced. Even players not made by Apple will have to have new batteries installed one day. How long do the batteries last in those models?
" That's some pretty insulting invective, particularly when it's coming from a person who apparently has a lot of trouble with sentence structure and punctuation."
Here mike I wrote these care to grade them for me. I would appreciate it.

I had a TRS 80 for a while -- same thing on the old Adventure game.
Wrote my own UART routines for modems.
Kids today have NO idea :)
You are welcome!
I know,,it is like crack cocaine isn't it? I cannot stop collecting music, even bad music, I may need it someday.
