Dignitaries to attend BTK news conference

Updated 8:50 p.m.

Wichita police have just announced that a "briefing on the BTK investigation" at 10 a.m. Saturday in the City Council Chambers will include "distinguished guests" Mayor Carlos Mayans, City Council members, Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston, Kansas Bureau of Investigation Director Larry Welch, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Kevin Stafford and Congressman Todd Tiahrt.

The announcement followed an afternoon of police activity in Park City.

A Wichita Police bomb unit truck, two SWAT trucks, FBI and ATF officers and other law enforcement were deployed in Park City near the intersection of I-135 and 61st Street North.

The activity has been centered on a residential area north of the fast-food restaurants and other businesses that line 61st street.

Neighbors said law enforcement vehicles began appearing about 11 a.m., a bomb crew arrived about 11:30 a.m., and the area was filled with officers by noon.

A woman on the block says one of her neighbors was taken away by officers early in the day.

There was no explosive, police confirmed, and at 6 p.m., the bomb squad truck pulled out.

In downtown Wichita this afternoon and evening, several uniformed officers have been standing outside Wichita City Hall, including on the top of the parking garage adjacent to the building, which houses the Police Department.

The link for the church in an earlier post....the president or some such biggie matched a city workers name from Park City. I'm told it is him. Not sure if I could post the name or not.

His name is Dennis Rader, wife, Paula. He is a compliance officer for Wichita and Park City, where he lives in the 2600 block of Independence Street. His job deals with dogcatching, animal control, and codes violations.

His neighbors say he was always real nasty to them about barking dogs or letting their grass grow too high.

A female neighbor two doors down was murdered in 1985. Her name was Marine hedge. Another woman in Park City, a coule of miles from his house, was murdered in 1991. She was Dee Davis. These are in addition to the 8 known BTK killings.

His DNA was obtained by WPD and FBI and sent for testing. The preliminary test shows it is BTK. They are waiting for a second test, coming back late tonight, to make doubly sure. There will be a police news conference tomorrow at 10 am. There will be present: WPD Chief of Police; FBI agent from the Wichita Ofice; DA Foulston; and a Kansas Congressman.

Articles taken from the victims as souvenirs were found and removed from his house.

Computers were taken from the Park City Library, which was closed all day today.

Rader was a student at WSU in 1979 and studied Law Enforcement.

He is president of the Parish Council at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Married with grown children.

His in-laws live on the same street as he and his wife.

Any questions?
