WASHINGTON (AP) - The economy grew at a solid 3.8 percent annual rate in the final quarter of 2004 - stronger than previously estimated- and an encouraging sign that the business expansion was firmly entrenched at the start of the new year.
The new reading on gross domestic product, released by the Commerce Department Friday, was better than the government's initial calculation made a month ago. That estimate showed the economy growing at a 3.1 percent pace.
The improvement reflected more robust spending by businesses on capital equipment and to build up inventories of goods. The trade deficit also was less of a drag on fourth-quarter growth than initially thought.
GDP, the broadest barometer of the country's economic health, measures the value of all goods and services produced within the United States.
The new fourth-quarter GDP figure also was better than the 3.5 percent growth rate that economists had forecast in advance of Friday's release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Although economic growth in the final quarter of last year was a bit slower than the 4 percent pace measured in the third quarter, the performance was still solid.

I seem to recall the owner of FR becoming a Repub during the run-up to the 2000 election and for good reason. He'd had enough of Clinton and he din't wanna git Gored!!!
The only consistent conservatives I've found were the fundamentalist variety. All the rest have been, have become, or will be conservatives of convenience to conform to the most popular conservative "principle" of the moment as perceived by the most powerful, or pursuasive of said moment. Let's call 'em "Momentum Conservatives," shall we?
Just for the record, a lot of those AARP folks were well trained in using lethal force.
Hmmm. Catapult fodder?
Speaking of overpasses...what would it take to get some concerned ElDo citizens to buy up a billboard along 50 with a nice "Carpetbaggers Go Home" message?
Based on the fact they're aligned with AARP, we know they don't have good judgment, so we can't trust them to know who the enemy REALLY is.
You know, I bet you could get some of the private property owners along the border to go along with you on that one. I don't know where everyone would have to dump though....yuck.
On the other hand, they would all probably wake up in the morning to find that their tires had been stolen overnight.
Si! Senor' dudeperson!!!
Let's make a distinction here people, cause there sure is a difference! Members mainly patriotic Americans with gobs of know-how! Staff mainly leftist interlopers who've started running AARP into the ground without the approval or even an advisory vote of the membership!!!
It's called a hijacking!!! It's not on the radar yet and staff wants desperately to keep it that way!!!
My recollection is the Jim changed his registration in June 2001.
I like Momentum Conservatives. It has a zing and conveys the contemporary image that neo cons enjoy.
I can only conclude that many Republicans honestly feel they must be conservatives since they are to the right of the Democrat Party principals. Unfortunately, by that same reasoning, socialist might also consider themselves conservative since they are to the right of communists.
Oh maybe. But what is that organization really worth to anybody? It's a lobby for government gimmes. I'd never be a member mainly because of my libertarian financial leanings.
That quote was mine, not Sierra Wasp's.
Typo alert:
shows the economy in the 74-7 recession
Should have read 74-75 recession.
"...from National City to Brownsville TX!!!
Chula Vista is closer to the border then National City.
;-}
Yes, and I forgot to add you to the reply. Sorry.
"The way people vote with their dollars, or other currencies, is one of the most democratic processes in all of our various republics built on said democratic processes! But people also vote with their feet to feed their fortunes and thus... Freedom cannot be unlimited, especially in regard to illegal border crossings. "
Well said!
BTW, I would be scared Sh$$less seeing a couple of divisions of Granny in RVs in-line in hull-defilade sporting ring-mounted Ma-deuces. Perhaps every 20th RV in-line should have a ring-mount MK-19. Probably couldn't hit squat, but certainly frighten the living Sh$$ out of the illegals....
notice that..? anyone?
So true.
The press and the people take the "path of least resistance" when it comes to thinking through issues. They avoid looking deep into issues to gather truthful and factual data. Take the easy way, the simple way, the press way, the teacher way, . . . anything but the hard way of independent factual verification.
The national IQ continues to erode.
I kinda knew that... just couldn't remember the name Chula Vista!!!
Some times a little exagerated fear and loathing is what it takes to "man" a border if the woosey US Government won't let our border patrol people do their jobs!!!
I like FReepers who were conservative, when conservative wasn't yet "cool!" (and who have remainded pre-cool conservatives!!!)
Well, you gave me the idea - Granny, RV, Ma-duece - it all fit.
