Churchill Art Piece Called Into Question

Feb 24, 2005 8:03 pm US/Mountain BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) Boulder County resident Duke Prentup has been a fan of native American art for as long as he can remember. That love of art took him to the home of Ward Churchill in the early 1980's, where Prentup bought several pieces of Churchill's art, including a serigraph titled "Winter Attack."

"I have enjoyed them ever since immensely, they're obviously up inside my house," Prentup said.

Last month came a stunning revelation, though, as as Prentup flipped through a 1972 book called The Mystic Warriors of the Plains written and illustrated by the late artist Thomas E. Mails. He found a sketch that was strikingly similar to the Churchill piece.

Because he's alleged to have lied about his Indian heritage, military service, and painting authenticity, by obviously conservative, traditionally ethical citizens, his lecture fees will skyrocket and the number of college engagements will flower. If he's persecuted by the right, the left has to come to his defense.

The woman in the right of the picture reminds me of a sepia colored picture in a CA history textbook - 7th or 8th grade, I believe. Will ask around.

Anyone with middle or high schoolers who have history books at hand?

WAIT a minute! If the painting is original, it's original and NOT copied. A copyist cannot claim "originality". However, if its a painted copy or facsimile of an original, the copyist must credit the original artist - even if its a photographer. I know, because I sometimes use photos for my own "art models" - not having any live models at hand. However, I am not a copiest nor a duplicator. I use a figure or face in a photograph as a guide for proportion and gesture for my entirely original subject.

Churchill is a thief and a fraud! By providing a document of authenticity guaranteeing originality with his plagiarized/copied/duplicated art work, this PHONEY Indian and fraudulent artist has committed a compounded crime. No wonder Churchill hates law enforcement, the courts, the FBI and the CIA - all of them MUST have records on him. I suggest the IRS should check him out too. Churchill get worse by moment to moment exposures. It's JUSTICE!

I used to teach 10th graders how to produce drawings like that in Geometry Class. At least Ward did something right in his life. He sat in the front row and payed attention in HS Math Classes.

Churchill’s claimed combat experience is in direct contradiction to his official military records.

I can't wait for this 'Cigar Store Creep', 'Professor Sitting Bullsh*t' to come to Pittsburgh to lecture at Carnegie Mellon or Pitt.

After the lecture, he will either be in jail after reacting poorly to our questions (taunts), or he'll be on the Fort Pitt Bridge ready to jump off and take his worthless, fraudulent life!

Ha. He's about as 'Indian' as I am Aborigine. Hell, my wife's 3/8ths Cherokee, and she looks about five times more 'Indian' than Churchill ever will. She also thinks he's got more shit in him than a Christmas goose, too.
