An episode of the NBC sitcom "Committed, featuring two characters who flush a Communion wafer down a toilet, has created a firestorm of protest among Catholics.
During the February 22 broadcast, two non-Catholics are mistakenly given Holy Communion at a Catholic funeral Mass. As recounted by the Catholic League:
"Nate, who is Jewish, and Bowie, a Protestant, dont know what to do with the Eucharist, so they make several failed attempts to get rid of it. For example, they try slipping it into the pocket of a priest, dropping it on a tray of cheese and crackers, etc.
"At one point, the priest, who is portrayed as not knowing the difference between the Host and a cracker, goes to grab the 'cracker' from a tray of appetizers; he initially balks when he discovers that it is the last one. Then he changes his mind, saying, "Oh, what the hell.
"By far the most offensive scene occurs when Nate and Bowie accidentally flush what they think is the Host down the toilet."
Catholic League President William Donahue is demanding that NBC apologize.
"To say that Catholics are angry about this show would be an understatement - the outrage is visceral and intense," he said Thursday.
"NBC has made a direct frontal assault on Roman Catholicism, choosing to mock, trivialize and ridicule the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ," Donahue added. "More than an apology is needed. This episode should be retired for good, and that is what we will demand.
"It is almost like you transform Communion into a witch's spell."
No RW, it is GOD transforming the Host into the Bread of Life. A MIRACLE repeated every day all over the world in the Universal Church founded by Our Lord. That you would spread lies about what Catholic's do and believe is telling.
Well said, thank you.
My God is strong enough that he need not put up with being flushed down a toilet.
You can flush a cracker, you cannot flush God.
God is not a cracker.
"My God is strong enough that he need not put up with being flushed down a toilet."
Really? Remember that your sins (and mine) beat Our Lord, spat on Him, Crowned Him with thorns, Mocked Him and then Nailed Him to the Cross.
And all of that was His intention.
Had He wished to stop it, do you doubt He could?
None of that had power over Him, I was all according to His plan.
Of course, including the current and future sins of fallen mankind. Consecrated Hosts can and have been desecrated, just as was the Body of Our Lord during His Passion. Thus your odd attack on the over one BILLION Catholic and Orthodox believers in Our Lord was just an ugly piece of baiting and has no other meaning.
And, that you live several states away.
I think you are confused, and mixing up Phil Donahue with Bill Donohue.
It's the MSM, what do you expect? Tolerance? Consideration? Respect???? To them, we are the enemy.
One of the reasons that decades ago I quit turning on the teeeheeeveee to watch them. They don't have anything to say to me... and even if they did, I have directly seen them outright ignore, obfuscate and (literally) lie often enough that, well, I simply cannot and will not trust them, ever again. So why bother?
Hallelujah...
Now I think I'll slowly back out of this thread and go bother Lazamataz or Senator Pardek. :o)
Y'all give 'em heck.
Dominus Vobiscum.
"I am an x-atheist, x-evolutionist who was lead to Christ by Teen Challenge when I was 18 years old."
Very good. What did the "Teen Challenge" tell you was the Church founded by Christ? What, if any, denomination do you consider to represent that Church?
"Anytime you do something so disrespectful like flushing a host down the toilet it is to us Catholics...sacrilegeous. I don't make fun of anyone else's religion or their practices and I darned well don't expect anyone to make fun of mine by such outrageous behavior."
ONE MORE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They didn't flush any host down the toilet.
IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON THE SHOW. THE ARTICLE IS WRONG!!!!
Am I the only one here who actually saw the show?
ROFL, it's a piece of bread. What is the deal?
narses:Really? Remember that your sins (and mine) beat Our Lord, spat on Him, Crowned Him with thorns, Mocked Him and then Nailed Him to the Cross.
Humblegunner:And all of that was His intention.
Ditto the Host. God is still with the world physically as per His intention to keep us strong with Him. But as always to save us He exposes Himself to our wickedness. That is why it says in the Bible that if you take the Host unworthily you are "guilty of profaning the body and of the blood of the Lord."
Havoc, I am speechless. You mean to teel me after all those posts on the NES you still don't understand what Catholics believe?
When I was a kid, a host got dropped on the altar and the priest had it vacuumed up after mass. We altar boys had a debate about whether we now had to honor the "Holy Hoover."
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
Indeed. Confess to God through the mediator Jesus Christ.
Of course I know what you believe, Pelayo. I also know it's just a piece of bread. And it struck me funny. They flushed a piece of bread. I didn't read beyond that because it really caught me off gaurd - flushing a piece of bread = blasphemy? Are we a little off the deep end or what? It isn't Jesus. It may represent Jesus in a proper setting for purposes of a remembrance; but, it isn't Jesus. And I would end in saying that while people may respect your right to believe something, they are not under obligation to respect your beliefs. Satanists believe they gain power in Hell by committing human sacrifice. The more painful the death and the longer it lasts, the more they believe will be in their charge. Their belief doesn't make it right anymore than yours does. I respect the right of a person to choose to follow my sworn enemy, Satan; but, I don't have to respect their belief in killing people and offering their painful deaths to their God. How do you suppose then that this person flushing a bit of bread either owes you anything, or does anything to you in the doing. If they mock God in anyway in the doing, it hasn't harmed you. Thus my initial reaction. Methinks you're looking for something to get worked up about. I find it extraordinary that you're more concerned about your feelings than their soul. But, I'm just a Christian. I can't suppose that someone from another religion should follow the tenets of mine..
