A toxic component of rocket fuel has been found in breast milk of women in 18 states and store-bought milk from various locations around the country.
The chemical, perchlorate, can impede adult metabolism and cause retardation in fetuses, among other things. It leaches into groundwater from various military facilities.
Previous studies have found perchlorate in drinking water, on lettuce, and in cows milk.
The new research, announced this week, suggests perchlorate is a bigger problem than thought, scientists said.
Texas Tech University researchers studied 36 samples of breast milk from women in 18 states and 47 samples cow's milk purchased from stores in 11 states. Every sample of breast milk contained perchlorate, as did all but one sample of dairy milk.
The highest levels were found in women from New Jersey, New Mexico, Missouri, Nebraska and California, in that order. The results are detailed in the online version of Environmental Science & Technology, a journal of the American Chemical Society. The work was led by Texas Tech biochemist Purnendu Dasgupta.
"We've got to come to grips with the perchlorate situation quickly,'' said California Senator Dianne Feinstein in a statement. "And EPA has to move quickly to set a national drinking water standard that protects the health and safety of all Americans.''

Yeah, I saw that "rocket fuel" in the headline and figured it explained all the "hyperactivity" in the so-called ADHD agenda-driven diagnoses. Then again, if Mom and Dad are getting "friendly" again while she's still breastfeeding, that "rocket fuel" would explain some of the close together siblings - you know, what some call "Irish Twins" - a year or so apart.
Sadly, the way things are going, the donkey will have you as the pet.
"Nice fuel tanks ya got there."
Bump for later enjoyment.
This may prove to be a blessing as it should lessen our dependence on middle eastern oil. We just have to figure out a way to extract the fuel from those "thingies".
Check out the tons of crap put into the ground at installations such as Aberdeen Proving Grounds. In the good ole days, weren't nobody watching, so stuff was disposed of willy-nilly. They don't even know where all the stuff is.
--I agree that it isn't a real problem in Nevada, but a certain level of perchlorate "contamination" is found as a result of the propellant manufacture near Henderson--it is an ongoing issue with the tree-hugger and anti-everything crowd, since it's appearing in the Lake Mead water in the parts per trillion---
And the Bullet Bras
So, does this make it more of an aphrodisiac, or just plain too hot to trot?
DAMN! ...I was wondering what that funny taste was!
They'll have to take her breast from my cold dead....
*oooops*!
(/ZOT umbrella opened)
"As high as 90 ppb". "Average concentration 10 ppb." NAS recommended "safe" level = 5ppb. Method used and accuracy and precision can be found in Dr. Dasgupta's recent scientific publications (I'm too lazy to look'em up for you---sorry).
Perchlorate, despite being a strong oxidant, is also highly stable (i.e. it takes a high activation energy to get the reaction started, but once it does, it goes like gang-busters).
Blame the "scientific pontification without the science" on the reporters. I know Sandy Dasgupta well. He turns out really high quality science.
Adopt a burro.
You should see what the US Defense Mapping Agency used to dump into the Potomac river everyday.
ADVISORY: (tatooed on breast) NO SMOKING DURING FEEDING!
so i guess until they can stop NATURE from producing it... it AINT GOIN AWAY!!!
