To the best of my knowledge the RC would continue on with their spiritual leader in that state. I believe the bishops would act semi-autonomous during that time.

However there is a large body of canon law that would still govern the actions of the bishops (and hopefully keep them from going screwy and heretical). A new pope would be elected by the college of cardinals following the passing of the current pope, and it would be his job to bring the RCC back together again and straighten out any stray bishops.

Hopefully I have expressed this properly, if not I trust that one of my brothers in the RCC will make the appropriate corrections.

By the same token though, the Pope joked that he didn't need two good feet (he was an avid hiker in his early years) to run the Catholic church! :)

On the subject of the Pope hiking. I can remember the Youth Conference coverage on TV when he was in Colorado, and the first thing he would do after he said his morning prayer was, he took off his brown loafers and put on a pair of track shoes and went hiking in the Colorado mountains near the retreat he was staying in.

When I first heard that, I tried picturing the Pope in full robe, with tennis shoes on. LOL

"You're making no friends here."

I'm not here to make friends. I dropped in to say a couple of things...one of which being that I hope the pope is ok and comes through this alright.

but apparently that goes ignored. But fine, whatever, you all win. You have sufficiently spanked and punished and my threads have been deleted. People who feel like I feel have even been told to "go to hell". But, of course, those threads aren't deleted.

Paul VI had drafted a letter kept by his secretary, a bishop, explaining his wishes should he become incapacitated. It has been speculated that a similar letter may be around for this pope. Oh, by the way it is the Conclave that picks the next pope.

It was Reagan, Thatcher, and the Pope. The Polish Solidarity movement would have foundered without the Pope's support.

Correct. From that, Lech Walesa was elected President, and Poland (JPII's birth home) has been a Democracy ever since.

Abide With Me - 50 Favourite Hymns

King's College Choir is about as good a choral group as you are going to get. Real British sound, beautiful tone, good acoustic space.

This hymn is a traditional part of the old Evening Service:

Phos Hilarion (O Gracious Light)

O Gracious Light,
Pure brightness of the everlasting Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blest.

Now we are come to the setting of the sun,
And our eyes behold the vesper light,
We sing thy praises O God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices.
O Son of God, giver of life
And to be glorified through all the worlds.

O Gracious Light,
Pure brightness of the everlasting Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blest.

For a very fine setting (with slightly different English translation), Monastery of the Holy Cross. Scroll down to the phos hilarion and click on it.

It always makes me cry a little bit, particularly thinking of our Holy Father possibly setting forth on his last journey. Whatever God's will may be for him, our prayers are with him.

What happens if the Pope is deemed to be in a vegetative state deemed permanent, and it lasts for years?

There's no provision for removing him, or for an "acting Pope". If he can't achieve enough lucidity to resign, he'd stay Pope until he died. That wouldn't be a complete disaster; the main problem is that Latin Rite sees without bishops (like mine) would stay vacant, because Latin Rite bishops are required to be appointed by the Pope.

This is a photo of two men, advanced in years, wounded by would-be assessins. Their respective survivals gave them that rarest of gifts: They had an ephiphay. They had a sudden and blinding insight that God had a plan for them, a mission, a task.

They were convinced they had to do at least one thing in their life, even if they literally would accomplish nothing else.

They were determined to complete their warfare against one of the greatest evils ever inflicted on humankind, the Soviet Union and its marionettes. They were steadfast in their quest to topple one of the most malevolent sources of despotism and tyranny the world has known.

To those posters who want to nitpick and troll, or whatever it is that gets their motor running...

Did Reagan and the Pope commit sins? Did St. Paul sin before he had an amazing day while heading down the road? Was that St. Peter who had a sudden memory lapse before the rooster crowed on Friday morning? Was that St. John who ran away and hid? Were these men sinners? Ya think? What a revelation!

But all of these folks had to answer a question at one point or another in their lives...

What would Jesus do?

John Paul II and Ronald Reagan knew the answer. And they answered the call.

-George

He could circumvent protocol. It would be unusual to do so, but in this eventuality, it would seem appropriate.

What you are failing to understand that someone who is highly respected as a religious leader is possibly dying. He leads the largest single denomination of Christianity in the world.

This thread is simply not the place for discussions of your feelings about the validity of the Roman Catholic Church.

I'm an atheist, for pete's sake, and I can understand the deep feelings about the leader of the RCC. Why can you not?

This thread is for discussion of the Pope's condition and for people to share their thoughts about that. It is not the place (if there ever is one) to trash the practices of the Roman Catholic Church.

Lots of messages have been pulled from these threads about the Pope. All were insensitive to the feelings of those who are worried about their religious leader. They were rude messages which served only to attack others' beliefs.

That's just not welcome here on Free Republic, and those messages have been deleted. Messages saying that such messages are not welcome are not being deleted.

It's time to grow up, recognize that you and your beliefs are not the center of the universe, and understand that the beliefs of others are not subject to your ridicule or disparagement. It's that simple.

Now, go somewhere else if you cannot show at least some respect for the beliefs of the Catholics who are worried about the head of their church. That's my advice.

Maybe, maybe not. But the fall of the USSR would still have occurred. Now, on the War on Terror JPII stated that we should not use our military.
