A waitress at one of my favorite Strip District restaurants last week used one of the industry's oldest cliches. She delivered a meal and reminded me that she "really didn't do this" for a living.
Waiting tables, she explained, was simply something she was doing until a well-paying job opened up in the field she studied during six years in college.
While this is rote conversation for wait staff in places like New York and Los Angeles, where everyone with a tray of linguini in their hands is waiting for a slot on NBC's "Fear Factor," it's unusual for Pittsburgh.
Or is it?
The waitress, it turns out, spent all that time and nearly $150,000 of her family's money studying social sciences, but after graduating she became disappointed with the entry-level salary of her chosen field.
"I can make, like, twice what I'd make as a social worker waiting tables," she confided, "so I'm probably going to just stay here."

Thanks for the reply. I mostly knit with whatever yarn I have available. I did try spinning once, and plan on doing some more when I have more time and can get the wool. I can see how someone could get a lot more for things knit from homespun wool.
I'm not sure if that would work for me, (I may need to hone my knitting skills a little more) but you have given me a great excuse to devote more time to knitting and spinning. :)
Isn't "Social Sciences" what you study for a career in the service industry? I mean really, what else is it supposed to be good for? If she was expecting more she was counseled poorly.
Exactly. It's an awful lie commonly told by liberals that getting some sort of bachelor's degree will guarantee success and happiness. They say this to encourage more students to go to college. That' more money in the form of tuition and state funding for them to use for their pet liberal projects.
Your attitude towards Networking will preclude you from ever making it in Networking.
All I can say is....Good luck in your job.
I don't need to travel to work. I don't need to have a boss telling me when I can go on vacation or how much I can make and I don't have any employees to worry about if they will show up.
And by the way....I have not pestered my relatives....they saw the amount of money I was making and they became involved on their own.....especially when they saw my new Acura (paid for by my company) sitting in my driveway!
And Oh yes.....Dolly Parton, DR. Laura, Pat Boone, Michael Singletary, Crystal Gail and many other Celebrities are now part of the company I'm Involved with.
just make sure that you learn spanish along the way ... remember , those are jobs that Americans wont do.
Ave for later
The "elite colleges" you speak of, today, run more than $35K a year, and that's not all in. Colleges you never heard of run in the high 20s. Colleges and universities you have heard of--approaching $40K a year, with everything. Trust me, I have a sophomore at one of them.
Friend, I know I'm going to hit a nerve here, but everything you said in your post telegraphs such a bad, negative attitude...that comes through in interviews. That's why you're not getting hired.
I'm glad your brother's doing well. But: MBNA is a scumbag predatory company. Maybe they're great to their employees, but their customers are treated horribly. Google and see.
It's painfully easy not to be an MBNA customer. I'm not one. Look at the back of your credit card. If it says MBNA, cut it up. Go with BankOne or CapitalOne or something more obscure.
One of my best friends has made a fortune teaching dance, ballet, tap, jazz, etc. She opened her own dance studio. She loves it!
I'm not an MBNA customer, for the reason I said. From your response, I'm gathering you agree that they're a scumbag predatory company.
Whatever.
Yes, I agree. College degree does not equal SMART!
Life does not have to be about regular paychecks
well yes, unfortunately, it does for me right now. I need a full-time job with medical benefits so I can support my 6 children. Were that life were so carefree that I could live it some other way. As for teaching, I already do that, just not full time. As for opening a conservatory, open your eyes and mind first. That takes investment money and time, neither as grad student filling a full-time load this semester I can do. And I need the job as soon as I can get it. Sorry that this does not make sense to you but having six kids does not make sense to most people these days...
Like I said, those at the top are reaping rewards. It's the old pyramid scheme, cept with some amount of legitimacy...
Understand that your experience is not the average experience. It's like the CEO of a corporation wondering why everybody wants pay raises all the time (he can't understand -- his salary is great)..
If a new network marketing company with market potential were to pop up, you bet I'd jump on board right away.. Getting in early is the key...
However, for established firms, in the area I live, forget it.. I make more money doing my day job, and I can always moonlight if I desire -- and make over six figures quite easily..
>>I don't need to travel to work. I don't need to have a boss telling me when I can go on vacation or how much I can make and I don't have any employees to worry about if they will show up.
For me, this is dependant on the contract I take. Sometimes I work at home, some times I work on site.
And, when my contract ends, I have all the vacation time on earth.. (I've worked an average of six months each year for the past 4 years -- and still make a very comfy living)..
Like I said, if it's an opportunity to get in at ground level, I'd join a networking marketing company.. Otherwise, forget it...
This is an example of "multi-level marketing logic" -- you may find it funny.
