A parent chaperon is accused of buying alcohol for students on a field trip.
Lenoir City Schools Superintendent Wayne Miller, along with police and the District Attorney are investigating the report.
Miller says the incident allegedly happened Saturday night, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Seventeen students and four chaperones from Lenoir City High's Chamber Choir were sightseeing and performing in the city last weekend. They performed in a Baptist Church Sunday.
Miller is still gathering information, but he says it appears a number of students were with a mother, when she stopped at a convenient store and bought the alcohol. He says just three students, including the woman's daughter, later chose to drink it in her presence.
"If a parent had provided my own daughter with alcohol, I would have a serious issue with that," Miller says.
His daughter is involved in the high school choral program, but she wasn't on the trip.
"I have no idea why, no idea why," he reacts. "It's just an example of extremely poor judgment on several people's parts."
Miller says a detailed, itinerary is designed to keep field trips on task. Typically, he trusts parent chaperones to supervise the time in-between scheduled events.
"We don't protect kids from parents, they are our allies," Miller says. "We've always assumed they have the same goals we do, for their children to be as successful as possible and to abide by the rules of school and civil law."
Normally, students caught drinking at school events would see a 365 day suspension because it's a zero tolerance offense.
This time, the consequences, like the circumstances, will likely be different.
Punishment for the parent isn't clear either.
"We're asking the police department to pursue this with all vigor," Miller says of the mother accused. "We'd like to see if there's charges that are able to be filed, that they are filed."
The mother accused has denied her involvement to the school principal.
The superintendent is meeting with all parents to explain what happened and what happens next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. He says counselors will be available.
Miller is also consulting with an attorney about having chaperones sign statements before field trips.
Roughly one in ten consumers of alcohol will develop alcoholism. No alcoholic can ever learn controlled drinking. Everyone who chooses to drink should at least be aware of the potential nightmare of this socially accepted drug.
Beer....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Yes, 17 & 18 is a good time to start criminal behavior.
Any adult who buys alcohol for children under legal drinking age (no matter how close to 'legal' those kids are), has broken the law and needs to experience the consequences.
If some 'mom' or 'dad' want to let their kid drink alcohol in their own home before the legal age, that is one thing. Giving alcohol to other people's kids without their express permission is morally wrong.
By an 'adult' who has no problem with breaking the law, or with involving other parents' kids in illegal activity.
Not exactly the kind of 'supervision' I'd want my kids to have.
For those over 18.
This really troubles me to hear this.
Parents back in my day would only give us pot.
Man - kids these days are SO spoiled!
:-)
People chug liquor too, shot after shot after shot.
I said I was in highschool last year. I can name off the top of my head about maybe 3 people who I know were hospitalized because over Alcohol poisoning by liquor. I can't name anyone who was poisoned by drinking Beer.
1 shot of liquor equals 1 beer. So, the volume of liquor versus the volume of beer,
And because Teenagers have the mentality of drinking as much as possible- they can down a bottle of vodka.
Nice attempt at using sarcasm to build a strawman, but you obviously did not read the rest of my post you quoted from. Might want to try reading a whole post before responding next time.
Right, it is. Since 17 and 18 year olds can be charged as an ADULT for drinking underage.
wait..who said anything about sarcasim and strawmen.
I was serious.
So since they can be charged as an adult they should do the crime?
Oh well, let them do pot so they can be charged as an adult too. We all know that kids today are too damn stupid to actually control themselves and act like adults. We all need pot and we all need to get drunk or else you are just a nerd. Gotta be cool, all the kids I know are cool, drunk, and stoned.
no your right it seems that way :)
I'm involved with the fraternity world. I get tons of this stuff regarding drinking and dangers and all that jazz. Most of the stuff that comes through is directly related to beer.
Hillary, I am so glad to hear you had a wonderful time in highschool and college.
Good Lord!
What has gotten into people these days?
The woman bought some beer on the way home and shared it with her daughter (whose age we dont know yet).
So shoot the poor girl why dont we?
This is stupid.
A parent should have the right to allow their own children to drink alchohol if they want and the state and a bunch of self-righteous know-it-damn-alls should go pound sand.
Would you feel different if the parent was a guy buying alcohol for 17 year-old girls with the possible intent of sleeping with one of them.
In order to be taken seriously. Believe me, you won't be.
