The problem is that Churchill put Native American/Indian as his claimed ethnicity on his employment application. That admission by itself could be fatal.

I just noticed at the Star Bulletin link that they have now issued a correction that he did not say that he was not an Indian. This guy is sure making hay of all the publicity he is getting.

He may have picked a wrong venue to declare that he's not Indian. In Hawai'i, the native Hawaiians are sensitive to the issue whether a person belongs to the native group or not. They use a quantum drop of blood to decide whether you're Hawaiian (so eligible for some benefits, including enrolling in Hawaiian only school like Kamehameha) or not. It doesn't matter that you're adopted by Hawaiian family, change your name, only eat Hawaiian food, and speak Hawaiian language, you are not still as being considered Hawaiian. That seems to be the case here.

Tenured eh?
Perhaps if he can't keep track of his creed, perhaps he isn't worthy of tenured status?

[His pedigree is "not important," Churchill said: "The issue is the substance of what is said."]
This reminds me of an incident in Northern Wisconsin during the mid 90's. There is an Ojibwa cemetery in the town of LaPointe and tourists sometimes walked through it and took pictures. One day, a whole bunch of "Native Americans" showed up with the national press (including CNN) in tow and demonstrated against the desecration of their land by greedy white people and demanded that the area be made off limits to the public.
I asked some of the local Ojibwa Indians, who were friends of mine, what was the motivation behind this and they all said they didn't know and that they didn't even know who the "Native Americans" were who were there protesting. Their best guess was they were a bunch of national activists who were bused in for the day for the sole purpose of making national news.
A short time later, the cemetery was fenced off by the state of Wisconsin. Now when I go to look in through the fence, there is vegetation taking over the tombstones and the wooden structures causing a much faster rate of disintegration.

I just remembered where I had seen Ward before and he is an indian. It was on TV years ago and as I recall the name of his tribe was the Acowees. As I remember they had a rather good working relationship with the local military, I believe it was F-Troop.

We're trying to protect the rights of Indians to divine for themselvesInteresting that he chose the word 'divine' as opposed to 'define' By any reasonable 'definition' Churchill is a pale face. But if we can all 'divine' what we are, he can claim to be an Indian as much as Tanto...so can John Wayne for that matter.

Churchill's membership in tribe honorary only
By Stuart Steers,
Rocky Mountain News
February 4, 2005
The former chairman of the Keetoowah band of Cherokee Indians says University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill was given an honorary membership that required no proof of Cherokee heritage.
John Ross led the tribe for several years in the 1990s. He says the Keetoowah established an "associate member" program to recognize friends of the tribe.
"If somebody helped out in a certain way, to honor them they'd give them an associate membership," Ross said Thursday. "There were 300 or 400 associate members."
Former President Clinton also was given an honorary membership in the tribe.

Let's review. Churchill is a professor of "Ethnic Studies", teaching about the experiences of Native Americans, although he is not Indian and has no idea of what it is genuinely like to be one.
Pardon me, why does he still have a job?
