This reminds me of an incident in Northern Wisconsin during the mid 90's. There is an Ojibwa cemetery in the town of LaPointe and tourists sometimes walked through it and took pictures. One day, a whole bunch of "Native Americans" showed up with the national press (including CNN) in tow and demonstrated against the desecration of their land by greedy white people and demanded that the area be made off limits to the public.

I asked some of the local Ojibwa Indians, who were friends of mine, what was the motivation behind this and they all said they didn't know and that they didn't even know who the "Native Americans" were who were there protesting. Their best guess was they were a bunch of national activists who were bused in for the day for the sole purpose of making national news.

A short time later, the cemetery was fenced off by the state of Wisconsin. Now when I go to look in through the fence, there is vegetation taking over the tombstones and the wooden structures causing a much faster rate of disintegration.
