Corzine, Lautenberg to introduce bill banning assault pistol use
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - New Jersey's U.S. senators plan to introduce a bill that would make it illegal for anyone, except a police officer or military official, to purchase or use an assault pistol that fires bullets capable of penetrating a bulletproof vest.
The Five-SeveN gun made by FN Herstal of Belgium has already been denounced by three national police organizations and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The handgun is small and lightweight and easily concealed in a person's pocket, the groups said.
Last month, the Brady Campaign released a videotape of its staff test-firing one of the handguns it had purchased from a Virginia gun dealer. The bullets penetrated a police Kevlar vest.
Democratic Sens. Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg said the guns are a menace to society.
"There is absolutely no reason anyone other than law enforcement and the military should possess firepower capable of piercing protective body armor," Lautenberg said.
The two senators plan to introduce the Protect Law Enforcement Armor (PLEA) Act next week. The bill would ban the sale, purchase and use of the handgun and its ammunition by anyone other than a police officer or military official. The bill would also prohibit the gun and bullets from being made in the United States.
Police officials from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers say every police officer in the country needs to familiarize themselves with the weapon because it poses a great risk to the public.
The U.S. office of FN Herstal in McLean, Va., did not respond Tuesday to an e-mail message seeking comment.
Beat me to it, Phil! Also, isn't there a lot of "Tony Soprano" mob-type stuff that goes on in NJ? If I lived there, I sure would want some protection!
How about the cops just getting thicker vests ??? Or when this becomes LAW will they go back to the 'good ol days' when the didnt NEED kevlar to 'protect and serve' ??? /unholy sarcasm
I guess this means only police and criminals (and body guards for Hollywood idiots and their kids) will have access to both the firearm and vests.
"Assault pistols"? Sheesh, what's next, assault pens?
It fires a unique cartridge, 5.7mm x 28mm, at IIRC about 2200 fps. So, call it a 22 (plus a hair) caliber pistol that fire the bullets at 22 mag or 22 Hornet rifle velocities.
Fired through the pistol, this bullet penetrates the vest at 200 meters, and a kevlar helmet at 200 meters as well.
Fired through the P90, it does the same at longer ranges.
I didn't know we could buy the Five Seven until the last Shotgun News came out. So where's the semi auto P90?
Little known fact. Your best weapon to use against someone wearing a bullet proof vest is a simple bow & arrow. BP Vests do not stop arrows. Seems crazy, but its true.
"The pistol is also made of plastic and can be slipped past airport security. (Schemer alert)."
Then I guess you haven't seen the 100% ceramic 1911's that the DEA carries on aircraft. The only non-ceramic part to the entire system is the primer/powder chain in the projectile. Barrel, slide, frame, cases, projectile are all ceramic and undetectable with a hand held metal detector.
(No, I don't know how they pulled off the magazine spring or the recoil mechanism unless they used some type of pneumatics.)
Yes, all sorts. Click on the link below the pistol in my posting above, then menu "Small arms" "5.7x28mm System" "Ammunition."
The website won't let me post a direct link to the page, you have to navigate their menus.
Doesn't seem crazy to me. The Arrow's razor sharp point could easily pass thru between the fibers of kevlar.......
Yeah, I'm tempted to buy one just cause they're trying to have them banned and they're a heckuva lot cheaper than a Barett M82 50BMG.
It doesn't even have to be the razor type arrows. Just a regular old metal point arrow will do it.
You are right. That is a new one on me. I meant my post to send up Schumer but I guess it was on me.
Are you sure the DEA uses these?
New Jersey's U.S. senators plan to introduce a bill that would make it illegal for criminals to purchase or use an assault pistol that fires bullets capable of penetrating a bulletproof vest.
You mean TARGET arrows?........
Yes. As long as your not using a K-Market, plastic recurve.
It's because of the arrows mass. The arrows I use weigh about 1200 grains. All that weight behind a small hard point.
