Eastwood Calls Critics Extremists

Clint Eastwood has acknowledged that a plot twist in Million Dollar Baby that raises the issue of euthanasia "does hit you with sort of a left hook," and that when he attempted to raise money to produce the film "nobody seemed enthralled with that." In an interview appearing in the current issue of Time magazine, Eastwood suggested that he was able to keep the plot twist secret because the movie was made "under the radar. Nobody knew we were making it, and nobody gave a damn that we were making it." Eastwood said that he was surprised that it took so long for the matter to become the subject of controversy. Asked about the fact that the attack on the film comes from his "constituency," Eastwood, generally regarded as a Republican conservative, responded, "Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right, you meet the same idiots coming around from the left."

When the absolute protection of life is gone, and they've come for you, Clint,
by then it's too late to talk about the fine nuances of right and wrong.

Clint, you and Mel Gibson should be close friends by now.

What an ass. Since when is oppossing the glorification of so called "mercy killings" extreme?

I guess that next we will be hearing about how "Dr." Kevorkian is a normal, middle of the road healer.

Funny how murdering people because they are no longer 'useful' is perfectly fine in some people's minds but executing a psychotic mass murderer is beyond evil.

What the hell is happening to the world?

Charlton Heston is Hollywood's last true conservative.

I think the critics of this movie are not only 'extremists' but also those care-givers who work with paralyzed people.

The issue of euthanasia appears to have some commonalities with the eminent domain theory of property ownership. Definitely both have the tendency to remove life and property from the individual by the power of the collective.
Certainly worked for big JOE STALIN, SADDAM, MAO, CHAVEZ, CASTRO, JIMMUH, HITLER, POL POT and the other great leaders.

I love the way people who encounter disagreement dismiss their critics as "extremists" without ever considering that perhaps it is their own ideas which are extreme.

And my understanding is that a lot of the harshest criticsm of this film was not so much over the content, but over the misleadingness (is that a word?) of the ad campaign. They really were selling this movie as a "feel good story of one woman's hard won success" and, gee, it's a bit more, or less, than that.

Eastwood obviously intended to shock and horrify his audience, and I think that's cruel and I think it's extreme, and he should take responsibility for that. Instead, he'll probably get the Oscar. Oh well, c'est la guerre.

I've observed that some elderly folks get more liberal and less rational as they age. It's much like trying to reason with a teenager...part of entering their second-childhood, apparently.

If you're not a pro-life conservative you're a Godless commie liberal, there's no in between. It doesn't matter where you stand on anything else, that's the defining issue. I guess we know where Clint stands.

So, shut up and condone euthanasia or be labeled an "extremist"?

I suspect Clint neglected to think about this. Senility perhaps?

ASPEN, Colo. Feb 20, 2005 — Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counter-culture author of books such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

but for some reason, Hunter Thompson recieved praises all around

My wife, the "extremist," is not home right now. She has been all night (again) at the home of a 16-year-old young man who has Cerebral Palsy and is paralyzed from the neck down. She is one of several round-the-clock nurses who care for this young man in his home.

He loves music. He loves his computer. He goes to school. He talks about those things he enjoys in life.

I'm proud of my wife, the "extremist."

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought.

No Clint, it's the assessment of so many concerns directly related to the given issue that aides one in arriving at the same single conclusion every time that leads to the extremism.

Basically you have not thought hard enough how to counter the position one has arrived at after pondering so much evidence.

You little movie simply isn't enough to sway those who hold the sanctity of life so dear.

Is there no difference between Clint Eastwood and Michael Moore. From the language I'm hearing, I would think they were in the same camp.

I love the way people who encounter disagreement dismiss their critics as "extremists" without ever considering that perhaps it is their own ideas which are extreme.

That is probably my all time pet peeve. I've developed a somewhat *bracing* method for outlining the problem for the "I'm right by definition" crowd. I will ask them, point blank and with no hesitation, "if you were full of $hi7, how could I prove it to you?" Followed by "if you can't answer that question, even if I'm right you won't know it."

Personally, I think the greatest crime Hollywood has perpetrated against humanity is reinforcing the misguided notion that getting issues out for "public debate" solves problems.

"Debate" does NOT solve problems; "conclusions" solve problems, and the only way to reach sound conclusions is to define things tightly enough to know when you're backing a losing proposition.
