Investigators are to install detectors beneath the Pyramid of the Sun that look for muons – charged particles generated when cosmic rays hit the atmosphere which continuously shower the Earth.

And I have been to the top of this pyramid. It's a cool view, but those nearly vertical staircases can really wind you at that altitude--and that was when I was in my twenties.

Open spaces inside the pyramid would allow more muons to pass through them than the surrounding solid structure.

Hmmm... muons must be related to peons since they share similar behavioral characteristics.

Finally, I got off my behind, uh, figuratively speaking, and tracked down this, which I originally read about some years ago in Tompkin's fringe-y book on the Pyramids. In 1969 Alvarez pioneered the technique:
