An American soldier overseas is fuming over letters he received from Brooklyn middle-school children accusing GIs of destroying mosques and killing civilians in Iraq.
Pfc. Rob Jacobs of New Jersey said he was initially ecstatic to get a package of letters from sixth-graders at JHS 51 in Park Slope last month at his base 10 miles from the North Korea border.
That changed when he opened the envelope and found missives strewn with politically charged rhetoric, vicious accusations and demoralizing predictions that only a handful of soldiers would leave the Iraq war alive.

This school is on the fringe of Park Slope, in an area with a sizable Muslim population. It is a few blocks from a mosque identified after 9/11 as a source of terrorist funding as well as bookstores carrying Islamo-terrorist propaganda. Also, the local Carvel store owner was charged with money laundering for terrorist organizations.
Despite the Board of Ed description, it isn't considered first rate academically. Some Park Slope kids take the subway to schools in Manhattan rather than attend.
As for Park Slope generally, it is Loony Left country. But losing 12 firefighters -- the entire squad of the local fire house -- on 9/11 definitely sobered up a lot of people.
I deplore the teacher's judgment in sending these letters and it confirms my gloomy view of NYC social studies teachers. Still, picketing won't teach these kids the lessons they need to learn. A few soldiers coming to the school as speakers would be a great idea, though. Anything to penetrate the bubble and expose the students to a point of view they rarely if ever hear.
He probably went through them and took out the ones that were patriotic and supportive.
Just another example of our school tax dollars being spent wisely. Schools need more money to do this more often.
That school teacher, and his darling little students need to meet reality.
Not that they would listen to soldiers who've been to Iraq, it's somewhat obvious that the class already has their minds made up.

Not only is it outrageous these demoralizing letters were sent to our troops, but at least some of these middle school children appear to be illiterate.

The NYC Dept. of Education has a page all set up for complaints. The school region is 08; JHS 51 William Alexander Middle School.
the two paragraphs above showing that the offending letters were the minority, together with the principles comment that they would "never censor" (which is proper), shows that they the 'error' was probably in not giving proper instruction to the students in the first place. Further, some 'screening' could be done as well, encouraging the students to simply not write if they have anything negative on thier mind.
Sad event .. but not sure if the teacher is 'guilty' of anything other than bad planning and follow-through on what should have been a positive experience for both students and soldiers.
