I never got Kafka till I visited Prague... What I've always liked about him is that I can't "get" him: the symbolism, it's thoroughly ambiguous. It cries out to be interpreted, yet no single interpretation is obviously correct. The Metamorphosis isn't really about a salesman turning into a bug. Interpretations run the gamut from sublime to asinine (my fave: it's how he percieved his life as a writer). Ditto The Trial: it's not about bureaucratic ineptitude, but what? One can interpret his stories until blue in the face.
Using symbolism like that...it's genius...

He is, however, somewhat redeemed by being proven to be a good shot. Yep . . . And by being a darned good writer. Can't take that away from him. Won't deny I laughed 'til my sides ached reading his stuff back in the old days. I was sorry to see him go completely off the deep left end later in life.

It's amazing isn't it? Just to talk in general about the phenomena of cheering the death of artists with whom you had political disagreement...Posts like 'Another companion for Satan' that would fit in an obit for Charles Manson but not for Arthur Miller and HST. The mind boggles.

Hard to imagine someone as iconoclastic as HST choosing a chi-chi place like Aspen to settle down.
He lived in Woody Creek outside of Aspen that in the early 70's had mobile home parks, trailers, and mostly run down old one story homes. It's a lttle "pricier" these days.
