Condi to replace Cheney next year? Report: Vice president likely to step down 'due to his health'

Vice President Dick Cheney likely will step down next year due to health reasons and be replaced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to a report by geopolitical expert Jack Wheeler.

On his website, To the Point, Wheeler reports there's a "red-breasted rumor bird" flying around Capitol Hill that has whispered the same thing to most congressional committee chairmen.

"We all know that Dick Cheney has been the best vice president of modern times, perhaps in American history," one such chairman told Wheeler. "And we know that he absolutely will not run for president in 2008. Further, he has an unfortunate history of heart trouble. So let's just say none of us will be surprised if, sometime next year, he will step down from the vice presidency due to his health."

Continued the source: "Should this happen, President Bush would need to appoint his replacement, just as Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford to replace Spiro Agnew. It is quite clear to us whom the president would choose should he need to: Condoleezza Rice."

Wheeler goes on to analyze what such a scenario would mean for the 2008 presidential election.

Writes Wheeler: "Being a sitting vice president places Condi in an impregnable position for the GOP nomination in 2008 and sucks every breath of wind from Hillary's sails. Historically, it's hard for a party to keep the White House after they've had it for eight years. This is George Bush and Dick Cheney's way to buck history – and make it."

Serving as Bush's national security adviser during his first term, Rice took over the State Department last month.

Secretary Rice is, IIRC, pro-choice and pro-affirmative action. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

OTOH, she's still better than Hillary, and this pro-life anti-discrimination voter will pick the imperfect over the unendurable.

We have a good two years anyway before we need to pick the '08

Condi is not qualified to be president although she may be able to win the election.

I don't think this is just rumor. I beleive it will happen.
Question, does a VP automatically become the nominee elect with no other candidates running against her for President?

Condi Rice supports the Second Amendment. She was a child during the KKK's reign of terror so she knows from experience why bad people in power want to disarm their victims. Contrast that to Bill Clinton who was paranoid about citizens owning guns even while he mostly ignored the terrorist threat. We don't need a leftist or a RINO who thinks the main problem in the world is the American people.

If Kerry who often did not show up to vote and skipped committee meetings was qualified to run for president, then Rice, who has executive experience, should be well-qualified to run. Let Dean and Kennedy complain that Rice is not "black" enough because she did not have a stereotypical job (a "safe" job for blacks) such as the Undersecretary to the Third Secretary of Civil Rights or whatever.

"...(besides George Washington or maybe one of the very earliest Prez's) being elected with no previous elected office?"

Any number of the "military presidents" qualify---Andrew Jackson,Zachary Taylor, Ulysses Grant, Ike (one has to consider Washington a "military president" as well). I suspect there were civilians in there too.

That may be true but what if scenario, what if Cheney's health really is getting worse, they have to be prepared for that scenario.
