Condi to replace Cheney next year? Report: Vice president likely to step down 'due to his health'

Vice President Dick Cheney likely will step down next year due to health reasons and be replaced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to a report by geopolitical expert Jack Wheeler.

On his website, To the Point, Wheeler reports there's a "red-breasted rumor bird" flying around Capitol Hill that has whispered the same thing to most congressional committee chairmen.

"We all know that Dick Cheney has been the best vice president of modern times, perhaps in American history," one such chairman told Wheeler. "And we know that he absolutely will not run for president in 2008. Further, he has an unfortunate history of heart trouble. So let's just say none of us will be surprised if, sometime next year, he will step down from the vice presidency due to his health."

Continued the source: "Should this happen, President Bush would need to appoint his replacement, just as Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford to replace Spiro Agnew. It is quite clear to us whom the president would choose should he need to: Condoleezza Rice."

Wheeler goes on to analyze what such a scenario would mean for the 2008 presidential election.

Writes Wheeler: "Being a sitting vice president places Condi in an impregnable position for the GOP nomination in 2008 and sucks every breath of wind from Hillary's sails. Historically, it's hard for a party to keep the White House after they've had it for eight years. This is George Bush and Dick Cheney's way to buck history – and make it."

Serving as Bush's national security adviser during his first term, Rice took over the State Department last month.

***Everyone keeps talking about Hillary's stance on illegal immigration. What is it? I haven't heard.***

Aha! That's the beauty of it - NOBODY has actually heard it. Only the talk "about it".

It's kind of like people who are famous, for being famous. They haven't done anything TO be famous but they are anyway.

As much as I like Dr. Rice, I do not want to see Dick Cheney step down, nor do I want a woman for our President.

It would be perfect if Dr. Rice would run in '08 as a counter to what could be a Hilliary candidacy. Women would come out in droves to vote for Hilliary if she were the only woman candidate, however if there were 2 women to choose from, there's a good chance the better one would win.

I don't think we can discount the novelty of a female candidate, even if it were Hilliary, who would more likely attract more voters if she were the only female running.

I agree with your comment Rintense who cares what the rest of the world thinks. Both my country and yours often finds itself at odds with the rest of the world anyway.

As for free bird forever comments coming from a country that had a woman Prime Minister and a very successful one at that I do not see it as a handicap. She had no problem in the Middle East. Also Condi is currently Sec of State in that role she probably has more day to day contact with the middle east than a President or Vice President would so argument unless you do not agree with her appointment as Sec of State does not hold water. Also don't forget Israel had a woman Prime Minister a very strong and well thought of one at that with Golda Meir. Having said all of this I do not consider replacing the VP either likely, viable or sensible.

***whats wrong with Tom Ridge?***

For one, he's pro abortion.
Secondly there's apparently 'something else' in his closet. If you'll recall he was the supposed front runner on Dubya's ticket in 2000, then he sank fast during the vetting process. That's why he was nixed as VEEP - there's 'something' there.

Perhaps as Sec. State she can learn to get the quake and uncertainty from her voice, which is present when she speaks 'off the cuff'.

***I suspect there were civilians in there too.***

IIRC Herbert Hoover was never elected to any office prior to becoming POTUS. He gained his fame through running a massive famine relief project (or something like that) in Europe after WWI.

Who gives a crap what the rest of the world thinks?

The appearance of weakness or vulnerability invites attacks and privation.

I know that Condi is the darling of the neocons and the CFR crowd, and I fully acknowledge all she has accomplished. I have even encouraged my little niece to follow her example.

But I fully believe that the election of a woman to the highest office in the US will be seen by our enemies as nothing more than a big "Kick Me" sign. One which they will most happily oblige.

It was my expectation that Rice and Cheney would switch positions at the end of the first term. Just thinking about who W is, and who the Bushes are, you had to know they're going to try to set her up for 2008 or 2012. You could see this coming in 2000. Not that I'm against it, but I would like to see her position on abortion a little more clear.
