Utah OKs Restricted Immigrant Licenses

Salt Lake City -- The Utah Senate voted Friday to take driver's licenses away from people who cannot prove they are legal U.S. residents and issue them a driving "privilege" card instead.

Lawmakers voted 18-8 to approve the measure, which goes next to the House. Gov. Jon Huntsman said Friday that he would support it.

Senators said they were alarmed by an investigation that found 58,000 undocumented workers had Utah driver's licenses and that some non-citizens were able to use the licenses to register to vote and cast ballots at the polls.

"It's scary, being taken advantage of," Republican state Sen. Gregory Bell said. "Once they get a Utah driver's license, it's a platform for everything else."

Republican Sen. Curtis Bramble said the bill would end Utah's status as a "gateway" for undocumented workers to obtain legitimate identification.

The driving "privilege" card could not be used to board a plane, register to vote or obtain any other official identification. It would have to be renewed annually and would have different fonts and colors than a regular driver's license.

Utah and Iowa showed some sanity today, along with the House last week on the illegal drivers license issue

Well, who would have ever expected that to happen? I thought they just needed licenses to drive to work and take the children to school.

We're still waiting for the Governator of California to speak out about this matter. The hispanic lobby here wants illegal aliens to have every privilege of citizenship without having to be a citizen (and they do). It's costing us BILLIONS every year to support these bloodsuckers.

Why, if they have enough information to issue this, don't they have enough information to give them a swift kick in the @ss back across the border?

Good question. I am sure the state would answer that their job is not to enforce immigration laws, but only ensure drivers on their roads are properly licensed.

One possible side effect of this law is that the gang-bangers who moved from California to take advantage of Utah's lax licensing laws and trusting populace to prey upon may just head back to California.

Definitely, a small baby step in the right direction. Next, the FEDS need to (1)start denying highway funds to states who refuse to close this loophole, (2)adjust the population downward for census appropriations by the number of illegal aliens in each state.

Illegal aliens are not morally equivalent to legal immigrants any more than counterfeit money is morally equivalent to genuine currency.

GOOD ONE!

Try telling DMV, among others, it is not their place to enforce federal currency laws.
