The identity of "Deep Throat" – the mysterious source that helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein break open the Watergate scandal that ended Richard Nixon's presidency – has never been revealed, although it's been the object of much speculation over the past 30 years.

Henry Kissinger

Now, it turns out that one of Nixon's top aides, John Ehrlichman, who spent time in prison for his role in Watergate, stated unequivocably that "Deep Throat" was none other than Henry Kissinger, who was Nixon's national security adviser from 1969 to 1973.

According to a report in "Editor and Publisher," a key publishing trade magazine, the information comes from Walter Anderson, chairman and CEO of Parade magazine and a close friend of Ehrlichman. Although Ehrlichman died in 1999, Anderson says the former top Nixon aide ID'd Kissinger as "Deep Throat" more than two decades ago in a conversation they had.

"He was absolutely convinced of it," Anderson told Editor and Publisher. "Ehrlichman argued that Kissinger was high enough in the organization to have the information, and understand it, close enough to Nixon to know all the details, and he was virtually untarnished by the Watergate scandal, particularly in the press."

Anderson met Ehrlichman in April 1981, according to the trade magazine, shortly after Ehrichman finished his 18-month sentence in federal prison for perjury and conspiracy in the Watergate cover-up. After hiring Ehrlichman to do some writing for Parade, Anderson later urged him to spill his guts on Watergate. Ehrlichman complied, penning a 1982 article published in Parade.

But now, Anderson reveals to E&P, within a few months Anderson asked Ehrlichman the one question not yet covered – the identity of "Deep Throat," the vital all-knowing source that told Woodward that to unravel the scandal he had to "follow the money."

"Without missing a beat," Anderson told E&P, "he said, Henry Kissinger. He believed it very strongly. I was taken aback that he answered so quickly and so assuredly. I didn't expect that. … He was so declarative ... absolutely convinced that Kissinger was Deep Throat."

Woodward and Bernstein, the Washington Post reporters whose journalistic exploits became a best-selling book and hit movie, both named "All the President's Men," which in turn inspired a generation of reporters, have said they will reveal Deep Throat's identity after he dies.

Call me crazy, but I have a gut feeling that "Deep Throat" was merely a figment of their imaginations. Just like Dan Rather and his "documents".

Good thing President Bush, his Daddy, and President Reagan never trusted Kissinger to give him an insider role.

It doesn't matter, as soon as whomever they claim is deep throat dies, they'll announce.

As far as I know, Kissinger is in excellent health, and one of the 2 guys stated that Deep throats health has deteriorted and will probably die this year.

and he was virtually untarnished by the Watergate scandal, particularly in the press.

Would being Deep Throat really immunize one from criticism? Woodstein wouldn't have criticized Deep Throat, but the other reporters wouldn't have known his secret identity.

I do kind of like the idea of a Jew bringing down the American President, though... </wicked smile> but WHY would Kissinger want Nixon to go down? They were buddies.

On that basis alone, I don't buy it.

the 2 best books on this topic are
"silent coop" who identified deep throat as haig
I believe this book got most of the story correct (liddy agrees with its main thesis that dean ordered the break in)
and leonard garmett (?) as white house lawyer who was also figured as deep throat wrote "in search of deep throat". He said john sears.
Makes total sense. We know deep throat was tall, smoked and drank a lot and great connections lived where sears lived and needed anonymity to protect his future political campaigns. my hunch garmett got it right.

The WP guys picked up a couple of scraps of info in the men's room or Graham got them from a drunken LBJ. The WP guys fabricated a big story that the ultra-;eft wing meida was pleased to carry. They'll blame it on some one who is dead and can't defend himself.

The proof of course, is that scumbag leftist presstitutes would have made more bucks from another book. The fact that they didn't make a profit or advance their agenda means they didn'y have anything provable. The Rather/CBS mendacity is a perfect comparison.

At this point, I can't believe that Deep Throat is fictional. It's been way too long ago for Woodward/Bernstein to have any use for maintaining such a fiction. Plus, if there was no inside people, it merely adds to the brilliance of their investagative reporting in bringing Nixon down.

Someone here on this site posted a detailed theory that Deep Throat was none other than Ben Stein. Looked very credible, if the alleged facts are true. When Deep Throat's identity is revealed, it definitely will be someone who is well-known to the public. I hope that the person will come forward before their deaths for an interview, even if the interview is not publicized until after their death. It would be fascinating to learn their motives and how they've lived with the secret all these years.

If Woodstein announce that so and so was 'deep throat',
how do we know they are telling the truth?

Intentional misstatement by the reporter. 10 yard penalty.

Now, it turns out that one of Nixon's top aides, John Ehrlichman, who spent time in prison for his role in Watergate, stated unequivocably that "Deep Throat" was none other than Henry Kissinger, who was Nixon's national security adviser from 1969 to 1973.

Anderson says the former top Nixon aide ID'd Kissinger as "Deep Throat" more than two decades ago in a conversation they had.

"Without missing a beat," Anderson told E&P, "he said, Henry Kissinger. He believed it very strongly. I was taken aback that he answered so quickly and so assuredly. I didn't expect that. … He was so declarative ... absolutely convinced that Kissinger was Deep Throat."

But, like everyone else, it is just a guess, as he had no proof, no statement from Kissinger to him stating he was Deep Throat, just all these "I BELIEVE HE IS".

"It's been way too long ago for Woodward/Bernstein to have any use for maintaining such a fiction"

LOL....come on now. These schmucks are so arrogant, they care about their credibility. Can you believe how big THAT story would be, if "Deep Throat" never existed? That would be Memogate x 1,000,000!!!

"WHY would Kissinger want Nixon to go down? They were buddies."

Assume the forever-shrouded-in-intrigue Globalist Kissinger was closer "buddies" with more powerful minions other than Nixon and all-his-men.
