Texas Children First
Lt. Gov. Dewhurst and members of the Texas Senate recently showed unanimous support for an initiative to improve our schools while reforming the way public education is financed. The Lieutenant Governor and members of the Senate presented their agreed-upon ideas to put "Texas Children First" as they tackle the issue of school finance.
Which of the following objectives do you feel is the best part of the proposed State Senate goals for school finance reform?
Teacher Pay Raise
End to Robin Hood
1/3 Cut in School Property Taxes
Increased Accountability for School Standards
Increased Funding for Schools Across the State
Texas Ping!
Who else should know?
I just voted--Man! teacher's pay raise is way ahead!
Being a property tax payer in this great state, I just sent my two cents in to cut property taxes by 1/3. You are right about the teachers hitting this web site, there are about 45,000 votes thus far and 38,000 are for teacher raises.
Amazing isn't it.
Thats always their answer. How does paying the teachers more improve the quality of student we're turning out?
I'm about to the point i believe all schools should be privatized.
If your a good teacher you stay, if your a bad teacher you hit the road.
We've used the kids as scapegoats long enough.
Friend is a "technolgy resource" at a Denton school: tells me that hitting this website is what all the teachers are doing in their spare time, an e-mail about this is circulating around Texas teachers like wildfire!
In Denton, the teachers can either vote from their desktop computers, or from their laptops, OR from their blackberries.
And they need more tax money.
THIS is the city where the schoold board is pouring millions down a rathole called the "City Water Park."
For which losses ran over $800,000 last year.
Let's follow that to its' logical conclusion:
We'll have better students when we have more responsible parents.
And what do you suppose the temperature in Hell will be when that occurs?
Just above freezing?
Make students responsible for themselves. Go to a voucher system that allows parents to spend the money in any school they want to send the kids. The private schools would be allowed to punish, remove and reward students on behaviour and intelligence. This would sift the problem child to a school designed to help him, and more importantly keep him away from those wanting to learn. It is insane that we mainstream disable children at the price of tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands a year. My neighbour had a school bus come to his door just for him, because he was deaf. It would have been cheaper to have a taxi everyday.
OTOH, my son had a bus come to the door to take him daily to a pre-school program for kids with developmental disaorders - for a year and a half.
He's now in 2nd grade, at the top of his class academically, and an energetic if not particularly capable participant in basketball and baseball.
So sometimes it does work.
Freeped, bumped and ping a few others .....

Hmmm.
I need a "SCHOOL VOUCHERS" option as top priority and don't see it.
My kids go to Coppell HS, where over 30% of our school taxes go to other districts.
Agreed
End Robin Hood.
HISD is about to privatize a BUNCH of schools. Don't know how they're getting away with it.
