Bad breath leads to ID of rape suspect; Woman said assailant smelled like her boss

By Patriot Ledger staff

A woman bound, gagged and raped at knifepoint in her Wollaston home told police she recognized her attacker because of his bad breath.

She said it was her boss.

Tuen K. ‘‘Dickie'' Lee, 36, of 200 Cove Way, pleaded innocent yesterday in Quincy District Court to three counts of aggravated rape, kidnapping and other charges.

Lee is the manager of the restaurant in downtown Quincy where the woman works.

She told police that Lee had recently been asking her personal questions, including whether she had a boyfriend and if she lived alone.

Bail was set at $100,000. Prosecutor Wendy Langlois had requested $1 million bail, saying Lee has business contacts in China and is a flight risk.

Defense lawyer Philip Tracy Jr. said Lee has Quincy roots and relatives. He said $1 million bail was more appropriate for terrorism suspects and drug cartel leaders.

Lee was ordered to surrender his passport and to stay away from the woman.

Police said Lee was arrested Friday, eight days after the rape, based on DNA evidence tying him to the crime scene.

The woman, in her 20s, told police she was getting ready to go to bed at about midnight on Feb. 3 when she noticed one of the lights in her home had been turned off. When she went to see why, a man dressed in black and wearing a ski mask grabbed her from behind, placed a hand over her mouth and threw her to the floor.

She said the attacker held a knife to her throat and took her to her bedroom, tied her to the bed, gagged her with duct tape and raped her.

She said the only thing he said was ‘‘calm down,'' spoken in an Asian language. She said he left with some of her money.

The woman's boyfriend found her still tied up when he arrived at the house at 1:30 a.m.

Police focused the probe on Lee when the woman told them she recognized the attacker from the odor of his breath.

There were no signs of forced entry at the house.

Police said Lee has no known criminal history.

Lee also is charged with two counts of assault and battery, two counts of attempting to commit a crime, armed assault in a dwelling, kidnapping, indecent assault and battery, home invasion, burglary and assault while armed, and armed robbery while masked.

That one million dollars would seem rather paltry if it was your wife or daughter who was raped. Lee had to surrender his passport. Well I won't go there. Welcome to America.

Hate to make humor of this situation but in the case of the rapist;
"A little bitty bad breath,
caused me an act of distress,
by putting by bod behind bars,
oh where can I find a dentist
to provide me with preventive."

Hey, in prison bad breath will not be your BIG problem.

I wonder if she passed a 'blind' breath test in a lineup at the police station. Get 8 guys with bad breath to blow in her face and see if she can identify the suspect?
