Tsunami victims to sue French hotel chain Accor, Thai govt, US authorities

VIENNA (AFX) - A group of Austrian and German victims of the Asian tsunami disaster are to file a lawsuit demanding that Thailand, French hotel chain Accor (Paris: FR0000120404 - news) and US forecasters prove they reacted adequately to the disaster, their lawyers said. The suit, naming Accor and the US-run tsunami early warning system in the Pacific as well as Thai authorities, will be filed in a New York district court this week, the lawyers said in Vienna.

Maybe it is a government entity being sued and not a private company. I don't know.

Both.

The suit, naming Accor and the US-run tsunami early warning system in the Pacific as well as Thai authorities, will be filed in a New York district court this week, the lawyers said in Vienna.

Here we have an excellent example of why the US gov, should not build any warming system for any other then domestic/military purposes.

I think members of MSM should be included in this suit, since there ability to spread breaking news (9.4 earth quake is breaking news) is far greater then US gov. One might think of suing schools in Europe too, evidently the cause (huge earth quake) and effect (tidal wave) was not properly taught in Europe.

Here is a clue, if a huge earth quake occurs in deep water or a large meteor strikes deep water do not go down to the beach to watch the waves roll in.

Here is another clue, all the water draining far away from the beach does not mean it's Miller time.

"Where is the European Union's Tsunami Warning System effort?"

Perhaps American victims should sue the EU for not having a tsunami warning system?

"I think these victims families are being traumatized again by being fleeced by these lawyers."

Oh please! Dollar signs are present in the victims families eyes, just as much as they are present in the lawyers eyes.

I think, therefore I am.

You are, therefore you must be sued.

Why don't we forbid ALL tort lawsuits?

Life is risky and dangerous...deal with it.

The suit would be valid IF U.S. was hired, and paid, to predict Tsunamis in that region.

I believe that in Federal Court Rules there are provisions for sanctions including money. Any U.S. lawyer who signs off on this lawsuit should be hit with sanctions by the Court itself ASAP.

Perhaps they should submit a lawsuit to God also?

Honestly NO ONE forsaw this and people did the best they could when it happened and afterwards.

It is true that sanctions can be imposed. It is also true that, in most contractual litigation there is almost always a clause that provides for recouping of 'Cost of suit and other judgment as the Court may deem appropriate'.

The problem is, the Courts rarely if ever enforce these clauses or the clauses themselves ignore large parts of the real costs of litigation in a frivolous suit. There is a sort of comradeship between the Courts and attorneys and it all too often prevails over the rights of, and fairness to, the litigants.
