Dog Praised For Waking Women During Fire
POSTED: 2:26 pm EST February 14, 2005
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Firefighters in Greensboro are praising a dog for alerting two women to a fire in their home early Monday morning.
Authorities said Rebecca Hanlin and Dorcas Ellis were asleep when the dog, named Bam, began barking constantly. The barking awakened the women and alerted them to the fire, allowing them to leave the house without harm.
"If he wouldn't have woke me up, I wouldn't be here," Hanlin told WXII 12 News. "I'm pretty sure of that."
The fire started at about 4:40 a.m. at the residence on Clifton Road.
Hanlin initially thought someone was breaking into her house. She ran upstairs to check on her aunt, and when she came back down she realized why Bam was barking.
"When I came downstairs my room had pretty much filled up with smoke," she said, "because it kind of hit my face as I was going out the door."
Firefighters found the dog unconscious on the second floor of the home, but they managed to get him out and resuscitate him.
Veterinarian Brooke Schwabenton said Bam is suffering from smoke and mucus in his lungs.
"He's not out of the woods, but he is doing pretty well for what he went through," Schwabenton said. "So we'll keep a close eye on him."
It's believed an electrical failure in a panel box located in the laundry room may have sparked the fire.
Cough!
I'm fine now.
A living smoke alarm.
You'll never see a cat do this.
Dogs rule!
I knew before opening the thread the dog wasn't a pit bull or Ambrose would have been posting.
"She ran upstairs to check on her aunt"
(and apparently ran back downstairs without grabbing her dog.)
If there's a fire in my house, all three of us are getting out or none of us are getting out. I would not leave my dogs to burn to death inside a building alone.
ROFL!!!
FYI....
hmmmm...were they liberals?
Just kiddin'
Give the felines a break.
Actually, I recall reading about a cat who alerted his owner to a fire and at least of one who dialled 911 when the owner needed medical attention, but I've heard of more dogs than cats doing such things.
Arf.
My first comment when I read this article was "She left the dog behind?"
I'm with you!
I ain't buying the part about the cat calling 911.....
Translation of the barking
"Hey wake up, I was trying to get at the pork chops you left on the stove, and I accidently turned on the burner, and, and, well there's a lotta smoke down here!"
They say a dog's mouth is cleaner than a humans.
Sorry, but my best friend's life was saved when his cat did the same thing.
