NEWARK, N.J. -- A man arriving from Portugal apparently committed suicide in a janitor's closet at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Authorities said the 39-year-old Maryland man was found by a cleaner Sunday afternoon. The man's name was being withheld while authorities tried to reach relatives.

The man apparently hanged himself between his walk from the plane and the customs checkpoint to re-enter the United States.

Authorities said the man, a U.S. citizen, was scheduled to make a connecting flight to Washington, D.C.

The Essex County Medical Examiner's Office planned to perform an autopsy.

(YOU'VE GOT ME) DANGLING ON A STRING
Chairmen of the Board

You've got me dangling on a string
Please don't let me drop
My life will surely stop
'Cause I'm trapped in a dream of needing you so
My heart's in a noose and I can't break loose

I'm not half the man that I used to be, and I'll admit it
Your love has become a habit to me, and I can't quit it
Won't you take this half a man and make this man whole again?

You've got me dangling on a string
Please don't let me drop
'Cause you're everything I've got
'Cause I'm trapped in a dream of needing you so
The feeling is strong and I can't let go

Every time I phone, your number's changed or disconnected
You have made my life a book of games--I feel so rejected
Girl, you've got the best of me, now come and take the rest of me

You've got me dangling on a string
Please don't let me drop
You're everything I've got
'Cause I'm trapped in a dream of needing you so
My heart's in a noose and I can't break loose

Girl, my nights are so lonely
Ooh, I'm needing you only

I only drink enough from your loving cup to keep me thirsty
Girl my need for you is oh so strong until it hurts me

You've got me dangling on a string
Please don't let me drop
You're everything I've got
'Cause I'm trapped in a dream of needing you so
The feeling is strong and I can't let go

You've got me dangling on a string...

See my #40. It should be nearly impossible to exit these corridors on your own. The TSA may be incompetent but the Feds on this end of airports are not.

"Who knows - maybe it was a return to DC that he was dreading that pushed him over the edge."

Thats what I was thinking. If I had to live in DC I would be severely depressed every time I had to return too.

OK, here's a coincidence for you. I arrived at Newark Airport on a Continental flight from Madrid this past Saturday.

It so happens, the Lisbon Continental flight arrived at the same time & baggage claim, so I was technically at the airport when this occurred.

FReepers might be glad to know that there were several stages of inspection & re-inspection for connecting flights.

Hundreds of people arrive at basically the same time...tough to leave the terminal, not tough to find a closet. Its not 100% escort service through customs & immigration.

This is how The Terminal should have ended in the first five minutes of the film, thus sparing us the rest...

That was a horrible film. I can't understand how the combined talents of Spielberg and Hanks produced such unwatchable dreck.

A tough crowd today. Not even one sympathetic response in here?

There's not enough information presented in the article to make a proper response. Maybe he had good reason to kill himself. Who knows?

Gallows humor is pervasive at FR and sometimes not necessarily inappropriate.

Exactly. So until I learn something that would make me reconsider, my initial reaction to a suicide is sadness and prayers for those left behind. Yes, people can react however they see fit; I was just disappointed by the tone of the thread given the information presented in the article.

The man apparently hanged himself between his walk from the plane and the customs checkpoint to re-enter the United States.

Suicidal traveler: "Well lookie there! How convenient that there is a utility room (unlocked at that!) between me and the customs agents."

[Man slips into this convenient room unnoticed.]

Suicidal traveler: "Cool... this room is the perfect set-up. Talk about luck!"

Was this guy doing "family" business in Portugal? Did he bump into a pal in Newark?

he landed from Portugal, went through customs, and was on his way to make his flight to DC when he went into the closet

What is even wierder is that he just got off a 6+ hour flight from Portugal. It was in between flights that this happened. I think the poster wondering if he got a cell phone message was onto something.

Ok, after reading the articles, for some reason I didn't think he had made it out yet.

Maybe I'm confusing my experiences going through customs, but I thought you landed, milled around filling out paperwork, went through one line, then went through another line, and then were released into the rest of the airport. It has been awhile.

It is sad, however.

Yes, if this was a real suicide, OF's post is the only thing that makes sense.

Velveeta found an update:

NEWARK, N.J. -- A passenger who had just flown in from Portugal was found hanged in a janitor's closet at Newark Liberty International Airport, authorities said.

The death of Anandio Da Conceicao was ruled a suicide by the state medical examiner, said John Hagerty, a spokesman for the state Division of Criminal Justice.

Da Conceicao, 39, of Silver Spring, Md., entered the closet in Terminal C about an hour after landing from Lisbon on Continental Airlines flight 65 at 12:24 p.m. Sunday, said Lou Martinez, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.

The closet was temporarily unlocked while a cleaner was nearby, he said. When she returned, she found the man hanging on a makeshift noose, Martinez said.

She summoned agents of Customs and Border Protection, who were unable to revive the man, said agency spokeswoman Janet Rapaport.

Da Conceicao, a U.S. citizen originally from Portugal, had not yet reached the customs checkpoint, and was scheduled to catch a connecting flight to Washington, D.C., Martinez said.

Having spent long long minutes in the terminal, waiting for arrivals and also waiting for hubby to get off the air train from the parking lots I can assure you people can certainly walk down the areas that say restricted and can access all areas.......there's hardly anyone really paying attention. Mostly the so called guards are chatting each other up, flirting, or just plain disinterested.

At least at Newark Liberty.
