Alan Keyes' Daughter Coming Out
CBS News ^ | February 14, 2005

Posted on 02/14/2005 12:32:30 AM PST by RWR8189

(CBS) The 19-year-old daughter of Alan Keyes has a Valentine for the anti-gay rights conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate.

Maya Marcel-Keyes will be making her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House, says Dan Furmansky, the leader of Equality Maryland, a gay rights group.

Last summer her father, a conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate, caused a stir during the Republican convention by labeling Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter a sinner and calling homosexuality "selfish hedonism."

"It was kind of strange that he said it like a hypothetical," she told the Washington Post. "It was really kind of unpleasant."

Marcel-Keyes told the Post her parents have thrown her out of the house, stopped speaking to her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay. She said she loves her parents.

Keyes' Web site says he is against "the homosexual rights agenda, including same-sex marriage."

Marcel-Keyes grew up in Darnestown, Md., attended a conservative Catholic school for girls in McLean, Va., spent a year in the south of India advocating tribal rights, and plans to attend Brown University this fall, according to an Equality Maryland press release.

Furmansky told CBSNews.com that Marcel-Keyes would not be speaking to the media ahead of Monday's rally, and probably not afterward, either.

Bloggers have identified her Web site as http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=Xmisled0youthX. The author of the blog says it is public and she has nothing to hide.

Nope, I never named a name, you did

No wonder you admire Keyes. You do verbal jigs just as he does.

Why are people condemning the Keyes for not supporting their daughter, but not condemning the daughter for not supporting her father? Honor they Mother and Father NOT Honor thy Children This girl does NOT support her parents and is acting out in a typical three year old fashion. I guess she has decided it is time for her to get some attention.

My father blew a gasket when I switched my major from chemistry to anthropology. Should I have switched back to show that I 'honor' him? Should I trade my car in because my parents do not approve of mine? Should I not smoke because my father is an ex-smoker, and therefore a nut when it come to smoking? Honor thy mother and father does mean that as an adult you do everything they say.

Mike Signorile: "So Mary Cheney is a selfish hedonist, is that it?"

Keyes had the chance to do the right thing and not take it personal.

>>>

He did do the right thing.

Whether selfish hedonists like it or not, tough tits...

exactly, as an ADULT, this entire article is based on the notion that she is a child who needs her fathers financial support and home.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

And the reactions of many are that even if she doesn't need his financial support, she still shouldn't be gay just to please him.

"It is the delusions of man that wishes and hopes and prays that the Lord of Glory will view their sins on a "case by case" basis."

I think its the delusions of man to think they know the mind of God, or that they think they can know anything as a fact with absolute certainty. I think the best we can do is stumble along blindly, doing what we think is right. I'm sure you are doing this, and that's a good thing. I am to.

Mothers and fathers have to expel children for destructive behavior every day. Whether it is for drugs, abuse, or criminal conduct it is a tough choice.

How many parents have had to exclude a offspring because they refused to get help to cease a destructive behavior. We are not talking about smoking or other red hering.

These are not all only children. What about the other siblings, or grand children. Nobody disputes that contact with homosexuals should be minimized when it comes to children. There are very good reasons to shun a person who refuses to see the destruction of their conduct.

Should the child see the error of their ways and THEN return they would be welcomed. Behavior has consequences.

I'm not stumbling along blindly, I have the guidebook. It was given to Moses by God.

I think it is delusional for man to contradict the Bible, thinking he knows more than these old fogies who wrote it. But hey, thats just me.

If you don't know where your going, any road will get you there, but you if really want to get somewhere, a roadmap is best.

Jesus said;
"And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell." -- Matthew 5:30
Perhaps that is exactly what Alan has done by casting his daughter out of the household.

Nope--I firmly believe that recruitment is not only possible but is actively happening on some college campuses. I went to a women's college in the 70's, which did not go co-ed. I went back for a reunion and from the looks of the posters announcing lectures, the greatest problem facing society was overcoming homophobia. One alum was shocked that there was a diagram in the restroom showing how to perform oral sex on another woman.

Many young woman who go to college have led very sheltered lives in structured households. The main focus has been academic, not her social life or "self-discovery". Many women have never had a date by the time they go to college. If you have never had a date, not thought much about your sexual orientation and look at life from an intellectual versus emotional point of view, you can be very vulnerable to someone who says, "You subconsciously put yourself in this college because you know deep-down that you're gay and just haven't come out yet." Your best friends are female (after all, that's all you find in a women's college), the need to compete for attention from the male community is absent, as well as positive (and potentially sexually-charged) male feedback.

Is it possible? Yes. We had a cousin as well as sister-in-law "converted" after the break-up of two bitter marriages. The logic for this? "Well, I'm such a failure with men, maybe I should have been with a woman all along." And these gals were over-40!

When did Lynne Cheney admit to being a lesbian? I'm sure Dick would want to know.

I know it's an exercise in futility to ask you for sources, but you're awfully mouthy for someone who's whole condemnation hinges on "what did he know, and when did he know it," but hasn't established either.

I guess we're all "guilty of it all", then. Unless you've uncovered a perfect non-sinner somewhere.

"Perhaps that is exactly what Alan has done by casting his daughter out of the household."

Perhaps. That or he's just a jerk. What's interresting about this whole debate is the lack of focus on Alan's sins. Does his daughter cast him out for his sins? Does his wife? Or is the only sin worthy of being "cast out for" (if it is a sin) is homosexuality?
I think there's a lot of hollier-than-thouness going on in our society. Plenty of people standing in line to cast the first stone.

I am not aware of that. Sorry. I do know that Dr. Keyes is a wonderful person and I hope that he and his family will get through these difficult times.

I don't think there's any question that homosexuality is a sin, but I think your broader point is an important one. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The word "all" doesn't leave room for exceptions, but you wouldn't know it from a thread like this.
