WP: U.S. Uses Drones to Probe Iran For Arms
Washington Post ^ | Sunday, February 13, 2005 | Dafna Linzer

Posted on 02/12/2005 8:07:25 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

The Bush administration has been flying surveillance drones over Iran for nearly a year to seek evidence of nuclear weapons programs and detect weaknesses in air defenses, according to three U.S. officials with detailed knowledge of the secret effort.

The small, pilotless planes, penetrating Iranian airspace from U.S. military facilities in Iraq, use radar, video, still photography and air filters designed to pick up traces of nuclear activity to gather information that is not accessible by satellites, the officials said. The aerial espionage is standard in military preparations for an eventual air attack and is also employed as a tool for intimidation.

The Iranian government, using Swiss channels in the absence of diplomatic relations with Washington, formally protested the incursions as illegal, according to Iranian, European and U.S. officials, all speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

A U.S. official acknowledged that drones were being used but said the Iranian complaint focused on aircraft overflights by the Pentagon. The United States, the official said, replied with a denial that manned U.S. aircraft had crossed Iran's borders. The drones were first spotted by dozens of Iranian civilians and set off a national newspaper frenzy in late December over whether the country was being visited by UFOs.

The surveillance has been conducted as the Bush administration sharpens its anti-Iran rhetoric and the U.S. intelligence community searches for information to support President Bush's assertion that Tehran is trying to build nuclear weapons.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that the intelligence community is conducting a broad review of its Iran assessments, including a new look at information about the country's nuclear program, according to administration officials and congressional sources.

That's why N. Korea is making noise. China & Russia are pulling the strings, including their allies, the Islamic Fascists. President Bush has thrown them. He has taken the offense in the beginning phase of WWIII. Also, Comrade Kerry’s lost was a major setback for the real axis of evil, China & Russia. You may doubt my theory that OBL, the Islamic Fascists are allies with Russia & China. Your argument is that Religious zealots would never align with atheists. Remember two sayings: the enemy of my enemy is my friend & useful idiots (The useful idiots label also applies to the American left).

DOD didn't have to admit the drones were being used. Should have told the Iranians the things were very large mosquitoes.

If this were late May 1944, I have no doubt a WAPO or NY Slimes headline would read "Allies decide invasion to take place in Normandy".

Agreed, especially in light of Condi's comments last week.

Something big is going to happen.
Soon.

It's called "Psy-Ops", gov_.

With all the articles and threads regarding "UFOs" over Iran between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. Someone who regularly prays facing Mecca should have had the gray matter to put two and two together and come up with "Predators".

Big deal.
We now know that they know that we know.

It's not the admission of using drones. It's what and where those camera recorded. Plus the number of Potential Targets those Predators GPSed and logged in their memories for later dissimination to myriad Tomahawks, ALCMs and GLCMs to be used at a later date.

Jack.

Your theory that Russia and China are working together behind the scenes is fascinating. Do you have any ideas as to why this unholy alliance?

Interesting. If true, you'd think they would've shot one down by now and paraded the pieces through Tehran.

...according to three U.S. officials with detailed knowledge of the secret effort.

This episode highlights the problems with the MSM today.

Does this phrase mean:

a. These "officials" are telling the truth?

b. These "officials" are distributing disinformation?

c. These "officials" are fabricating the story?

d. These "officials" are fabricated by the Washington Post.

e. All or several of the above.

f. None of the above. Somebody else is jerking the Post's chain.

In a game of "Who Do You Trust?", it ain't the Mainstream Media.

I agree. However, President Bush has said that Iran will not be ALLOWED to have nukes, continue their Nuclear Weapons Program & delivery systems. Bush is playing true brinkmanship with Russia & China. Will they go to an HOT war with the United States to protect their client state, Iran? I would not test President Bush if I were Russia & China. They may find their civilization in nuclear rubble.
