This year, the Libertarian Party is -- for the first time -- taking part in the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) annual conference as a co-sponsor. The conference will be held February 17-19 at the Ronald Reagan Building in downtown Washington, DC.
A disparate group of organizations will sponsor the event, including the Objectivist Center, Americans for Tax Reform, the National Rifle Association, Regent University, National Taxpayers Union, the ACLU, Heritage Foundation, Bureaucrash, Log Cabin Republicans, Drug Policy Alliance, the College Republican National Committee and a host of others.
"A prime example of the variety of opinions in CPAC sponsors is seen in the fact that at this conference, there will be a discussion about the War on Drugs, and whether it should continue with wholehearted conservative support," said Libertarian Party National Director Joe Seehusen.
"In the past, both sides of the debate would have been in support of the Drug War. The inclusion of this discussion shows that many conservatives are at least willing to consider a change."
As a cosponsor of the CPAC conference, the Libertarian Party will have access to restricted areas and special events, will host a booth manned by party headquarters' staff and volunteers, and will distribute literature to every conference attendee.
In addition, the Libertarian Party's Web site, www.LP.org, will be linked on the CPAC Web site for a year.
"The CPAC conference is one of the biggest outreach exhibitions of political action groups in the DC area, and we look forward to between 4,000 and 5,000 people attending," said Samuel New, who is organizing the party's activities at the conference.
"Visitors to the LP booth will be able to join the party, make contributions, sign up to volunteer and get more information about the party. We expect to receive a number of inquiries from people who otherwise might not have encountered Libertarians, and to showcase Libertarian ideas," Seehusen said.
"While we aren't aligned with the political views of these other groups on all subjects, the other groups that are involved don't necessarily line up, either," he added. "By taking part in this CPAC conference, we hope to show that Libertarians are the true fiscal conservatives -- much more so than the Republicans are."
Along with the other activities Libertarians will pursue while at the conference, there is also a chance that a Libertarian Party representative will take part in a debate regarding the Cuban trade embargo, but details haven't been set, New said.
Yeah, and with a moronic attitude like that, the Libertarians with whom you might have been able to forge an alliance with on some issues will never come back.
Libertarians constitute less then 1/2% of the electorate. Some estimates place the figure at 250K. Whatever the membership is, Libertarianism is irrelevent. Conservatives may find Libertarians agreeing with them on the need for fiscal responsibility, but the overall Libertarian agenda is too wacky to be taken seriously by rational folk.
Yes, but if I were with CPAC (which I may or may not be), I'd take their money for a booth.
glad to see the log cabins are getting in on the action....
Agreed. It's a free country. CPAC can take money from whoever they choose to associate with.
I'd still like to see them stop voting democrat and to start voting republican.
Party Libertarians are a different animal altogether.
The Losertarians could increase attendance but half their members are stoned...
No they aren't. They're busy working on that petition to have all street signs, guardrails, and traffic lights banned.
Thank you.
Most of these groups should be ideological brethren...with the exception of the ACLU. The Log Cabin Republicans are not very conservative, in fact not very republican, but better under our tent then the other.
I kind of like libertarians, Conservatives that haven't grown up yet and like to smoke dope. Some of the more interesting Ballot issues in Mass have originated with the libertarians, strange group, but interesting.
I would disagree. Many of the Log Cabin Republicans are fiscal conservatives and social liberterians. We, the Republicans, espouse limited government, but have a hard time saying no to government pork.
The Libertarians are an ecclectic group. Some are young and idealistic, others are in for pot restrictions lifted...others are desinfranchised Republicans and others. I think that the desinfranchised Republicans numbers are growing considering the spending policies of the current Administration. Honestly, I am a pretty partisan Republican, but I am tired of the spending traits of the Republicans in Congress and this Administration and have considered voting Liberterian from time to time. Then I come to my senses and cast the ballot the right way. I realize that voting third party is generally a waste and real-change is done at the grass-roots level.
Au contraire. It isn't just fiscal responsibility where Libertarians agree with Conservatives.
They believe in the sovereignty of the states. They fight taxation. They believe in private property rights. They oppose judicial activism. I could go on.
Is that wacky?
I'm probably more of a libertarian than I am a Republican -- although voting Libertarian is an exercise in futility and I wish they would just STOP with the open borders stupidity -- and thought it was funny.
Many would probably think that there are a few Republicans who could stand a good toke etc. :-)
