House Passes Tightening of Laws on Immigration (Trent Lott Says Guest Worker Program is DOA)
The New York Times ^ | February 11, 2005 | DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Posted on 02/11/2005 9:58:16 AM PST by GOPGuide

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 - The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to approve a bill tightening immigration laws in the name of border security. The main provisions of the bill, which passed 261 to 161, block states from issuing standard drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants and make it easier for judges to expel asylum seekers.

Representative F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., Republican of Wisconsin and sponsor of the bill, said that the measures were necessary to fulfill recommendations of the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Noting that several of the men involved in those attacks were illegal immigrants who had American drivers' licenses, which they used as identification when boarding planes, Mr. Sensenbrenner said the bill "aims to prevent another 9/11-type attack by disrupting terrorist travel."

- [SNIP] -

But Senator Trent Lott, Republican of Mississippi, said, "The president's guest worker program is not going anywhere, period." Mr. Lott added: "He needs to go ahead and accept it. We are not going to do anything that looks like, smells like or in anyway resembles amnesty, period."

Given that Trent Lott has never missed an opportunity to demonstrate his idiocy since 1994, this tends to make me think that the Bush proposal is much better than advertised.

This week Mr. Delay discussed a possible compromise between Republicans and President Bush on the guest worker program that would allow immigrants to apply from abroad with a job lined up, with a fixed return date and without the right to bring their families.

That's the first thing I've seen that makes sense.

If Lott wants to do nothing, then I wonder what he would propose to do about the millions of illegals who are already here. We don't know who they are, where they are or how many of them there are. So, how the hell are you going to "round 'em up and deport 'em" -- especially if you don't have the manpower to find 'em?

Consequently, if we're going to exert any control over this unidentifiable and unknowable mass, we've got to identify them. And, if there is no incentive to identify themselves, they won't come forward.

A fixed return date and excluding accompanying family is critical to the program. It's essentially a return to the pre-1965 bracero program.

Lott's got it wrong. Delay's got it right. Figure the NYTimes to feature the guy who's wrong.

Hey you all can give your kudos to Lott, but I will trust DeLay more than Lott. Intellectually and politically.

It sure looks like all we will get with a GOP congress is the defeat of a GOP presidents agenda. They will tank the social security bill too. Who needs liberals?

>"billions for a wall/fence, ..."<

_ You have no problem with the U.S. spending an additional $80,000,000,000 (BILLION) dollars for IRAQ's *SECURITY*, do you?

Then why would you oppose our country spending a tenth of that (1/10th, 10%) for a security fence that would:
PROTECT U.S. CITIZENS LIVES AND PRIVATE PROPERTY?

Or is that too noble of a concept for your mind to grasp?

George Washington said it best:
“Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground?”

This may be the first time in a year that I disagree with you, but this is bull$hit. If a country is in trouble due to high abortion rates, you don't recruit illiterate, uneducated criminal slobs to replace the average worker.

These low class, lowlifes have
1) Bankrupted our hospitals
2)Swollen our welfare rolls
3) Filled our prisons with violent criminals
4) Destroyed what was left of our public schools.....and the list could go on for hours.

What you do is close the borders, recruit only educated people who pass a criminal backgroud check, and who speak english. There are hundreds of millions who qualify for all of the above.

If you look at the numbers that are missing because they never got born over the past 32 years from being aborted (65 million) you will see a large hole.

That hole has to be filled to support the ongoing social programs - namely social security.

Mexico is filling the hole.

"It's mind-boggling how the vast majority of our elected officials couldn't care less about our nation's porous borders."

==============================

Yes, truly mind-boggling. Check #59 again.

The vast number of elected officials understand that with a tax income less than what is required to operate the government as we know it can't survive and that we *must* have at least another 20 million tax payers on the IRS rolls in the next ten years or your checking account (regardless of how much it has in it) won't buy a loaf of bread.

That's where the Mexican migrant comes in.

Preposterous? Did you think ten years ago your public school would be hiring Spanish-speaking teachers to educate children whose primary language is Spanish?

Or, did you think that every product you buy in every store in the United States has bilingual instructions on it?

Its valid. 100% valid.
