Just for fun, I went to CBS News' website to find out who their Chief White House Correspondent is (John Roberts); and after reading the CBS-provided glowing bio of the guy, I Googled a bit to learn more about this pretty-faced professional journalist.
It was a fun journey...
CBS News bio says this of Roberts' early years in "journalism" in Toronto, "He also served as an anchor and correspondent for several broadcasts of City TV in Toronto (1979-89)."
"Roberts was born in Toronto. He attended the University of Toronto."
Wired News (archives) says of "JD" Roberts in this December 1993 story about City-TV, "Like pilgrims to Mecca, young, talented media disciples flock to Citytv. The quirkiest and luckiest of the lot find acceptance, experience, and some form of further exposure. Among the self-exiled fronting broadcasts for competitors now is CBS Morning News anchor John Roberts, who cut his teeth at Citytv as rock 'n' roll reporter J.D. Roberts."
The blog scaramouche had this to say about "JD" Roberts in September 2004, "It comes as no surprise that CBS, eye newly blackened by the bogus document scandale, is looking to mothball its addled anchor as quickly as possible. The New York Times, of course, frames it as a retirement issue: Dan, at 73 is at an appropriate age to be cast aside for a studlier, more robust news reader. One of the candidates being considered is John Roberts. Torontoians may remember him back in the late 70s as J.D. Roberts, his earlier incarnation as a spandex-clad co-host (with fashion victim Jeannie Becker) of CITY-TV's show The New Music. John ditched the spandex some time ago in favour of the more sober threads of a "serious" news guy, but I will always remember him as the tousel-haired stringbean--sooo uncool-- interviewing rockers like David Bowie and Keith Richards in CITY's threadbare studio--kind of like a glammed up Wayne's World with marginally better production values.
On the MikeBoon.com blog (November 2004 archives) I read this comment, "Growing up in the 80s, in the years before MuchMusic, my main source of music videos was a show called "Toronto Rocks" hosted by J.D. Roberts on CityTV. It was on every afternoon and featured the popular videos of the time. Roberts brought me the latest videos from Twisted Sister, The Cars and The Talking Heads when I got home from school and I appreciated it.
The big news of this hour is the resignation of CBS anchor Dan Rather, effective this March. This announcement means the CBS Evening News will require a new anchor. That very same J.D. Roberts, who now prefers to be called John Roberts, is CBS's White House correspondent and a likely successor."
"To think that J.D. Roberts may be replacing Dan Rather who replaced Walter Cronkite. Toronto Rocks!"
LOL! Spandex.....SHOCKING!!!
Can somebody explain the networks' love affair with Canadian journalists?
Just what the legacy tv media needs... another cannuck news reader...isn't Jennings enough???
We can have fun with this...
hahahaha!!
And Terry Moran came straight from Court TV.
And Peter Jennings never graduated high school.
Spare us...
They are generally to the far left and are masters of being arrogant elitists.
Awwwright, who's got pictures?
Keep it coming!
List of White House Correspondents
Go get 'em!
Leave Byron York alone. He's a good guy.
I hear Richard Simmons is taking over anchor duties on 60 minutes II.
The White House correspondents have been whining about Jeff Gannon not being a professional, didn't have the journalism background they did, etc.
So Jeff didn't have a rock 'n roll show back in the 70s, like CBS' Chief WH Correspondent.
Is there anyone right of center on this list?
