Whenever I get misty and miss the hardwood forests back where I grew up, I watch that movie. Pretty good music score too.
They're heroes because they served at a time when they were treated like second class citizens. Served above and beyond the call of duty. Russell Means has NOTHING to complain about.

Long story, but I know someone who took his 'cure' as a priest at Pine Ridge Reservation. Means would get drunk on Saturday night and shoot the rectory door full of arrows .
Interesting - I wonder if he's still involved with AIM? They were tripping all over themselves running away from Ward Churchill when he first surfaced in the media. Now, Means, who may be a big wheel in AIM, is publicly supporting him. Sounds like they may be trying to have it both ways.
It is a gorgeous movie. And the only time DDL actually had a hunk factor. I have a friend who as gotten pregnant twice after watching the movie.

Whatever wrongs there were perpetrated against the Indians they are no different than those perpetrated against blacks, or Irish, or Hispanics, or Chinese or scores of other ethnic groups. Further every nation shares some such sorry behavior in their history.
What matters is that we are a nation of reasonably equal opportunity today and you can truly make of yourself what you want. At 14 I was a penniless orphan. At 16 I ran away from the "caring" NYS welfare folks to live in thewoods up behind the local high school.
Today I'm wealthy, have a business, and 5 kids including a doctor and two Marine officers. Only in America could a smuck like me have a life like this.

The reason that I mentioned the Cheyenne thing is that someone was calling for a Navajo Chief (in Marine lingo an Indian) to kick ass. So I anted up.
OMG! That is funny. My friend in college was gah gah over Eric Schweig, the Indian guy who played Uncas. She got to meet him when she worked for the Nez Perce, but came back crestfallen.
Apparently he was quite an arrogant prig.
That happened to be on a couple of days ago, which prompted me to point out to my son and his girl friend the irony of a slug like Means playing the "good" indian, while Wes Studi played the "bad" indian, Magua. I thought that Studi was of a similar political bent to Means, but there was a thread last year where at least one Freeper who seemed credible said that Studi is a friend and is one of the good guys, politically. He is apparently a proud Vietnam Vet.
I love that movie.
I really love it, too. I think of it as part one of two great historical movies about early America, with The Patriot being part 2.
An aside about Last Of The Mohicans. Did you know that the director, Michael Mann (of Miami Vice fame) was trained as a painter, not a film maker? I think it really shows up in how he composes shots, particularly in LOTM. It is a truly beautiful film.

I think that is (one of) the primary reasons I love LOTM so. Same with "Girl with the Pearl Earring" and the most recent "Jane Eyre". It's like watching chocolate cake.
