As one Marine put it, this was the perfect war. "They want to die, and we want to kill them."

Gen. Mattis is a WAR-GOD!!
Just tellin it like it is when your on the right, gets you chastized but talking like Ward Churchill or Mikey Moore gets you awards and good press. What a mixed up country we've become.

"Only those who think we should be fighting a more sensitive War on Terrorism have concerns about the General's comments.
The rest of us agree with the General."
No, your statement is not entirely true. Perhaps it covers most of the posters at FR, but not all posters at FR.
I don't think we should be fighting a more sensitive war on terrorism in any way. I think this fighting man should watch how he says things when he isn't on the battlefield or training young warriors.
I don't think killing anyone should become "fun". Talking about it may be "fun", and people may enjoy lobbing word bombs occasionally, but the killing of another human being should never be "fun". So, those of us who think the man has one big mouth and loves to show off should leave our opinions at the door lest we be labeled as undesirables? Fine...it will be a pleasure.

I know what you mean.
When I joined, we could sing cadences with words like "daisy-chain your Claymores and blow 'em all away," or "64 troopers on a one-way trip." Now, that is considered too violent.
But, as we all know, the purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. Not a meals-on-wheels program *cough-Clinton-cough*

For instance the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on the Pentagon to discipline Gen. Mattis for the remarks. CAIR's council's executive director, Nihad Awad said, "We do not need generals who treat the grim business of war as a sporting event. These disturbing remarks are indicative of an apparent indifference to the value of human life." This is, to me, a far more cynical and egregious and criminal declaration for any contemporary muslim to make. It is beyond belief.
I would immediately challenge the same individual to search his sad excuse for a soul, and try to recall the exact words that he used when condemning the most recent beheading of a civilian hostage in Iraq...

What is the purpose of the military, esp. the marines? Are they not to blow things up and kill people? Why is it so rare for a man whose job is death and destruction to take pride in it? Nothing the military does is Politically cleansed. In the context of war it is kill or be killed, their is no room for PCness.

And acting like a Marine makes room for such principles of restraint in war as chivalry (defend the weak and the innocent) and proportionality (use only the force necessary to achieve the objective).I thought we'd decided that "overwhelming force" was much better vis a vis American casualties than "proportionality."

Do you have a career? Do you enjoy your career? Why doesn't the General have the right to enjoy his career?
Like it or not, civilization needs warriors. Always has. Always will.

"All I feel when I kill, is the recoil of my rifle."
War is hell and those of us who have participated have the right to say things like the General, in what ever forum we choose, and you have the right to respond in kind.
