Arizona governor demands reimbursement for immigrant criminals

PHOENIX – Gov. Janet Napolitano announced Tuesday that she has billed the federal government for nearly $118 million in unreimbursed costs for imprisoning illegal immigrants who committed crimes in Arizona.

If the federal government doesn't pay, it should take custody of some 3,600 immigrant criminals now in state prisons, Napolitano said in a letter sent last week to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Napolitano released the letter – and copies of two invoices sent with it – one day after President Bush proposed eliminating funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program. The program is supposed to reimburse state and local jurisdictions for costs involved in incarcerating immigrants convicted of a crime.

Justice Department spokesman Eric Holland had no immediate comment on Napolitano's demand.

Anybody know if there is a legal reason the border states can't use the National Guard on the border?

but that is not the answer.....that is an "enabling" quality and then the feds will do less.....you don't do your kids chores do you if they don't do them.....no, you get on their backs and teach them well......yeah in an emergency we can do what we have to but in the long run, hell that is the gov't #1 responsibility......protect the citizens of the US.....nothing is more important

I agree it is obviously ideal if the feds handle their responsibility. But they ain't doin' it.

The feds ain't doin' it AND it MUST be done.

Shall we continue waiting around for Feds to do what they haven't done and obviously refuse to do???

just don't know the laws well enough to know what the state can and cannot do in regards to the National Guard as such...alot of them are being used for a little thing called Iraq and guarding some state interests for Homeland Security as well

...just don't know the laws well enough to know what the state can and cannot do...

State legislatures know the laws and can write new laws. Making this an election issue for the state houses is a win for our side.

I think another former Governor made this statement..."Said Gov. Bush in 1995 while suing Washington for $5 billion: 'If the federal government cannot do its job of enforcing the borders, then it owes the states monies to pay for its failure.'

Wonder what changed his mind? Why does he enforce the failure he spoke of in 1995?

Fox will just laugh at us. That is what he is doing now. He doesn't want his own people and can't figure out why we do.

Probably. I remember something like this before. The problem is in a pot simmering and is getting ready to boil over.

I don't know what the answer is, It just needs to be solved.
Amnesty is not the answer.

Yes, of course the Mexican gov't would not pay -- but, seriously, I'd hope Fox would loudly protest the act so as to maximize press attention on the costs of the Illegals to the separate states and to the nation as a whole.

That is a good idea. He has no respect for us or our government. So that would probably bring outrage from the American people for the federal government to act.

The problem with "controlling our own borders" is that the Federal Government won't allow us to! We CAN'T DO ANYTHING because we would be stepping on the toes of the big guy.

If we could, believe me, we would - I would happily volunteer to patrol the border every day.

I remember Florida's Dem Socialist Governor Lawton Chiles did this before the '94 election to show that he was "getting tough" on immigration. He then talked out of the other side of his mouth promising Haitian voters not to worry about a cut in bennies.

I agree......what I was refering to is that an earlier post about Calif said the same thing and all the ignorant Calif bashers were out saying it was our fault......but the minute an Ariz one comes up they disappear.....so I'm on your side but I was commenting on the cowards who come out to only bash Calif for everything but don't do it to others. Just trying to make a point....I kept telling them it was primarily a fed issue but of course they are intolerant red neck idiots who don't listen....

My apologies, I thought you were implying that we (AZ) could actually do something about the border! :-) I'm sorry you feel like people bash Cali. It's a good state! :-)

Our Governor is ALWAYS quick to point a finger at the government - she cried foul during the gas pipeline crisis instead of taking a firm stand on all those who jacked up the price of gas. No, Ms. Napolitano, blaming others first is NOT the American way. She took her sweet time to sign Proposition 200 which passed overwhelmingly by us Arizonians who DON'T want to pay medical and school costs for ILLEGALS...FIX THAT, JANET! You're the gov'nr, YOU stand up and do what needs to be done instead of blaming others! There's no laws that state we can't put up brick walls all along our southern border!
