Arizona governor demands reimbursement for immigrant criminals

PHOENIX – Gov. Janet Napolitano announced Tuesday that she has billed the federal government for nearly $118 million in unreimbursed costs for imprisoning illegal immigrants who committed crimes in Arizona.

If the federal government doesn't pay, it should take custody of some 3,600 immigrant criminals now in state prisons, Napolitano said in a letter sent last week to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Napolitano released the letter – and copies of two invoices sent with it – one day after President Bush proposed eliminating funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program. The program is supposed to reimburse state and local jurisdictions for costs involved in incarcerating immigrants convicted of a crime.

Justice Department spokesman Eric Holland had no immediate comment on Napolitano's demand.

Only 3,600? We've got over 40,000 illegals in the Los Angeles County Jail system alone!

wow.....like many others just bashed Calif for this problem on an earlier thread......should I now say that Arizona created this problem and maybe they should learn how to control their own borders and not let illeagals in? Of course not, this is happening all over and the feds need to step up and solve this problem. Bush and Congress need to reimburse all states that have to take care of the problem they seem ao unwilling or unable to solve.......

That would be almost all 50 states. Illegal aliens are a problem. It is unfortunate. I have a cousin in Ohio said the same problem is there too.

FYI -- Several states have already sued for this and lost. Several circuit Courts of Appeal have decisded the issue, and all have dismissed the suits.

Believe it or not -- Bush did the same thing when he was governor of Texas -- he and Chritie Todd Whitman both sued in the Presidential election year -- and lost in different Federal Courts.

Then something else needs to be done. We cannot continue this.

Ought to send Mexico the bill, and, if they won't pay, then extract it from trucks coming into AZ from Mex.

From California: Come on Arnie, they are crippling the state. Get on board and help start the momentum.

I know...that is what i'm saying....many here like to bash Calif cause it is fashionable or they are just ignorant. But I don't see them bashing Arizonia and a thread that is almost identical to a previous Calif thread on this...just hypocritical garbage.... like you said, it is all over, obviously worse in border states but the minute you blame another state, you are gonna find these illegals all over your state as well....

But hasn't ol' Janet tried to thwart measures that discourage illegal immigration? Hasn't this babe been part of the problem, and is now asking the nation at large to pick up the tab?

The Feds are unable AND unwilling to handle the problem.

The problem will be solved by individual states. THe feds won't like the way it's done - but the folks who live there will find a way to handle it.

The tab would be quite a bit lower, Janet, if you didn't so actively obstruct efforts to keep out the illegals in the first place. What a joke.

Didn't Gov. Wilson of California try this when he was in office? As I recall, he was talking of a law suit against the feds?
