PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was so ill in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl that a teammate had to call a play in the huddle, center Hank Fraley said.
"He fought to the end," Fraley told Comcast SportsNet on Monday. "He gave it his all. He was almost puking in the huddle. One play had to be called by (wideout) Freddie Mitchell because Donovan was mumbling because he was almost puking."
Offensive lineman Jon Runyan also echoed Fraley's comments in the same interview aired on two local radio stations on Tuesday after the Comcast report.
McNabb was shaky in Philadelphia's 24-21 loss to the England Patriots on Sunday, throwing for 357 yards and three touchdowns, was also getting picked off three times.
McNabb misfired on several passes early, held the ball too long in other instances and made several poor decisions. One of the best scramblers in the NFL, McNabb had zero yards rushing on just one carry and was sacked four times.
An Eagles spokesman did not immediately return a phone call Tuesday.
Yup. No mealy mouthed excuses.
He wasn't puking during the post-game.
Here comes the excuses, is this dude related to gigilo?
"It wasn't my fault. Honest! I ran out of gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! It wasn't my fault, I swear to God!"
"Ain't my fault we lost"
Bump.
2nd, Steve Mcnair a few yrs ago.
And the symptom of his disease was poor clock management?
So, sportscasters/writers weren't taking a guy who has some talent and acting like he's the second coming of John Elway because they wanted a black QB who had promise to be a HOFer? He said they overlooked his faults and glorified his gifts. Same thing happened with Jason Blair. He was smart and the Times thought he had extreme promise and overlooked his negatives. Liberals do it all the time.
And my bringing up Jordan should be in no way taken as condemnation of McNabb. Sick or no, winners do not use sickness as an excuse. And in all fairness to McNabb himself, I have not heard him offer any excuse whatsoever for the loss. He's taking it like a professional, no doubt replaying his mistakes in his mind, and planning on a rematch in January 2006.
The point that Rush made about McNabb is that he is an average/good quarterback but not a great quarterback. The MSM of Sports wanted to spin him as a great quarterback. That doesnt happen in the NFL. You have to produce at some point. He did get hammered just before halftime. That explains the Eagles poor time management, plus aside from T.O. the other Eagle receivers are a bunch of Girlie Men. Finally, we must not put McNabb down too much because of the MSM. He is just an average quarterback, end of story.
that game is also supposed to be one of the "great moments" of his career.
"I don't know is this is true, but his passes did have a dying duck quality instead of the usual zip. I chalked it up to tentativeness."
Not to pick on you, but I distinctly remember the commentators commenting about his throws being too hard and overthrown, which he tends to do when he gets hyper.
a bad case of I-suck-itis
a bad case of I-suck-itis
I agree. They had a legitimate chance to wing that game or at least send it into OT, especially considering the Pats had lost their starting corner. I never saw poorer clock management in HS, College or Pros.
Maybe he was sick, but that is no excuse.
No problem Freddie, you certainly weren't doing anything else at the time.
He WAS throwing up.
I don't think he was "choking", he's a tough guy. Remember him getting up after breaking his ankle in a game and throwing 4 TD passes? I've never doubted his toughness, just his consistency. He's better than he used to be but he was very hot and cold in the Big Game. Made some great throws but also made a lot of truly bad throws, even aside from the 3 ints.
Good point. The problem is McNabb himself who by all accounts seems to be a good guy (probably in no small part because his Mom would kick his ass if he were not).
The problem is the how the media and others perceive McNabb.
And the whole thing is somehow related to race but race isn't the only factor. McNabb gets better treatment by the press than perhaps he is entitled to... but it seems like TO got worse treatment than he was entitled to. The explanation involves race, but race is only one of many factors.
The world is half-mad half the time.
