NEW BEDFORD, Mass. A man charged with murder after shooting and killing a suspected burglar last year was released after prosecutors did not request bail.
Charles Chieppa, 57, pleaded innocent to second degree murder Friday in New Bedford Superior Court.
Family members of the slain man, Frank Pereira Jr., 24, said Chieppa should not have been allowed to go free.
"We have wanted to see him in jail since the day it happened," Pereira's sister, Missy Cimbron, told The Standard Times of New Bedford. "A life was taken. Regardless of the situation, you should be in jail."
Cimbron said the family would continue monthly candlelight vigils in front of Chieppa's house until the case is decided.
Police initially said Chieppa, an expert rifleman who served in Vietnam, shot Pereira last June as Pereira was breaking into Chieppa's 134 Ashley Boulevard residence. But later police said they were investigating whether Pereira ever entered the house.
Prosecutors said there's evidence Pereira tried to break into several vehicles in Chieppa's driveway.
Pereira allegedly stole a purse from a bar patron hours before the early morning shooting, police said.
So9
It's not surprising people in New England miss his kind.
"My son didn't deserve to die the way he did, even if he was trying to break in," said Evelina Salgueiro, the victim's mother. "You don't shoot someone in the back like that."
yeah. like she would have said "hey man, nice shot" had he shot him in the forehead . never underestimate the ability for a parent to rationalize how wonderful their
rotten kid is.
Nice bit of newspeak there. Defend your home and you are a "murderer".

Cry me a f-ing river. Yes, Mr. Chieppa should have had a beer and a ham sandwich ready for the hard working burglar. Instead he had the gall to "murder" him.
Cimbron said the family would continue monthly candlelight vigils in front of Chieppa's house until the case is decided.
Obviously these people have no shame.
You owe me a new keyboard. LOL
I wonder if Mr. Chieppa has a sprinkler system....
A perp dies during the commission of a crime? Tough cookies. They had it coming. We need to stop being such whimps on this subject.
1 Less Criminal= Good Thing.
I would like to see a high pressure sprinkler system installed with remote movable heads!!
ditto! HONK HONK HONK HONK! I'm really surprised they actually let Mr. Chieppa out of jail, here in MA if you are the victim of a crime you usually get sued by the perp for one reason or another, I'm glad New Bedford gets it.
There's a case here where some loser threw hot coffee in the face of a meter maid, his defense, oooops, I slipped on the icy sidewalk, which indicates not only will he get off scott free but will end up with mucho denaro as I'm certain he will sue the city for not keeping the sidwalk free of ice.
BEEP!
Wrong. Go back to Mexico. Thanks for playing.
Someone that I know heard a noise in the middle of the night. He got his gun from it's place and listened. The noise was coming from his daughters' bedroom. (2nd floor apartment.) He opened their bedroom door, and saw a man with his hands around his 11 year old daughter's throat, trying to drag her out the window. He aimed and shot him right between the eyes. Another one bites the dust. The police took him to the station, but he was released that morning because his daughter had handprints around her neck from the perp.
anything worth shooting once, is worth shooting twice!!
Regardless of the situation? How about this situation:
A terrorist is holding a room full of school children hostage. He is about to push the plunger to detonate a bomb. Before he can do so, a Second Amendment lover who works in the school puts two rounds into his skull. Should he be in jail, too? Regardless of the situation?
The slain man, Frank Pereira Jr ........
I'll bet this guy was a heroin addict.
You would be right.
