A UNLV professor under fire for comments he made about homosexuals during a class lecture last year demanded Friday that the university stop threatening to punish him.
"I have done absolutely nothing wrong," said the professor, Hans Hoppe, a conservative libertarian economist with almost 20 years teaching experience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, on Hoppe's behalf, sent a letter to UNLV officials alleging that the university violated Hoppe's free speech rights and his right to academic freedom.
"The charge against professor Hoppe is totally specious and without merit," reads the letter from ACLU attorney Allen Lichtenstein.
He said they would sue the university if necessary, though they hope to avoid it.
UNLV officials would not comment on the case, saying they cannot talk publicly about personnel matters.

Witness the recent case in which two senior, tenured professors were forced out of the University of Southern Mississippi for criticizing the administration. You are doing Hoppe's cause a great disservice if you assume he is safe simply because he has tenure. This is not necessarily true.
points well taken, I am always suspect of any move the ACLU does.
We agree on that. I much prefer the Foundation for Individual Rights.
As do I. And Churchill's. That doesn't include if he's a fake Indian or if he called for terror attacks on the American meatpacking industry, but it certainly covers whether he thinks of America as a Nazi regime. That's a matter of opinion. I think his opinion sucks, but it's an opinion.
But I'd wager that the ACLU weighs the pros and cons of every case they take...and doubly so, when it's seemingly a conservative cause.
I can't factually present any evidence here....but I'd gather/guess the "perceived" & "potential" value is duly measured....
FWIW-

Hoppe would describe himself as libertarian, I believe.
Perhaps but so what??? There have been countless "fire Churchill" threads and posts here but what about defending Hoppe. Instead of attacking academic freedom, conservatives and liberarians should be defending their own who are attacked. Where is the sense of proportion?
Thank you for your refusing to join the lynch mob. Churchill is a scumbag but if tenure and academic freedom are destroyed, conservatives and libertarians will be the prime victims. The "fire Churchill" crowd are biting off their noses to spite their faces. They are paving the way for mass firings of conservative academics but newly empowered PC administrators (who would love to abolish tenure and academic freedom).
I say don't fire, rather debate.
With Churchill, perhaps fire him, but only because he seems to endorse more 9/11's. But don't miss that opportunity to debate him.
Better yet, claim to be a homosexual Indian.

Ping!
It would be cool to tell the University and their star chamber to pound sand. (Note, the chilling of free speech works both ways. Churchill comes to mind.)
Treason and sedition are punishable under the Constitution, speech against homosexuality is not.
