UN stunned by revelations over Iraq’s food-for-oil programme

New York (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The UN official investigation into the oil-for-food programme in Iraq shows that the UN official running the programme was involved in a kickbacks scheme.

Paul Volcker, the former head of the US Federal Reserve who headed the panel of investigation, said that Benon Sevan, who ran the humanitarian programme, solicited and received allocations for a trading firm registered in Panama connected to the family of former Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali. “In making such solicitations, Mr Sevan created a grave and continuing conflict of interest. His conduct was ethically improper and seriously undermined the integrity of the United Nations,” the panel said. ... The oil-for-food programme, which began in December 1996 and ended in November 2003, allowed Saddam Hussein’s government to sell oil to buy basic goods for humanitarian purposes. It was intended to ease the life of ordinary Iraqis under UN sanctions since 1990.

Volcker said in the interim report—the final one will be available in June—the most serious violations of UN sanctions involved illegal oil sales outside of the oil-for-food programme. “And there is no question that those sales were known by the UN Security Council,” Volcker said.

The fraud allegations have cast a shadow over the world body and its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, who chose Volcker to lead the investigation. ... Iraq’s human rights minister said today that anyone who stole from the UN programme should stand trial and the money be repaid to the Iraqi people.

Bakhtiar Amin praised Volcker’s report and said it revealed that even some UN dignitaries “profited as parasites on the misery of an impoverished nation”. He said that “those proved to be involved should be rapidly brought to justice”.

Could someone please call that dirtbag Churchill and remind him that his favorite organization (most likley) on the planet was starving those kids in Iraq, and NOT the United States' government.

How in the hell does a bribery scandal shock an organization populated by thugs, dictators, and communists?

"How in the hell does a bribery scandal shock an organization populated by thugs, dictators, and communists?"

They are shocked to find out how much more they could have squirrelled away if they had been smart.

This is a bllsht article because it fails to mention how many billions were thieved from the oil for food program. How much did Saddam steal and how much did UN officials and others siphon off. Probably due to the limited information in the press release from Paul Volker and company

My 2¢'s about the UN?

Neal Boortz has the right idea- kick them off US soil, plop them down in Haiti, and tell them, "when you get this straightened out, give us a call..."

Moreover:

--Sex abuse charges rock UN in Congo-
-- Interesting this is being posted today. Talk show host Dennis Prager had the Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Doree Gold, on his show today. Mr. Gold has just written a book about the UN called the Tower of Babble(i think this was the title). Some of the things he was saying about the UN were unbelievable.

--TV campaign urging: Kick U.N. out of U.S.-
"I say we just give the entire country of Haiti to the UN."--or move them to Zimbabwe or another country in Africa. Let them see what the really do for the world.

--UN knew of Saddam's oil-for-food thefts: BBC-
The sooner we resign from this corrupt organization and kick them off our soil, the better.

“And there is no question that those sales were known by the UN Security Council,” Volcker said.

The U.S.of A. is a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council!

This is not Breaking News to the White House, State Department, Congress, the US Senate, or Beltway Insiders!

I fail to see what's to get "stunned" about. It's as if I took my entire 401K and put it into the hands of a cheap hoodlum to invest as he saw fit. Of course I'm going to get ripped off, and of course I'm not going to be surprised about it. It's the nature of things.

That is akin to saying the integrity and virtue of a porn star was undermined by showing her new DVD.

He'll just say that they were all capitalists, infected by the same greed that permeates America.

As if we invented greed.
