WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is proposing new limits on campaign contributions to restrict the activities of so-called 527 groups.
The 527s raised and spent more than $400 million in the 2004 U.S. elections.
The proposed limits, including a $25,000 cap on donations, add on to those championed by McCain and Wisconsin Democrat Sen. Russ Feingold in their 2002 campaign financing law. That law did not, however, restrict the 527s from collecting large sums of money from individual contributors.
The backers of the new restrictions said they were determined to stop such spending before the 2006 Congressional elections begin, the New York Times reports. Without the new limits, supporters predicted, the 527 groups will have a corrosive effect on the system by becoming a permanent channel for unlimited contributions.
The groups affected, however, were quick to criticize the effort.
"It's putting all these restrictions on your free-speech right to talk about issues and elected officials," said Ellen Malcolm, president of the liberal America Coming Together and the founder of the abortion rights group Emily's List.
I can't stand McCain, someone kick him out of the party already,
Sheesh! Not Again!
The Dems (amoung whom I, personally, number McCain), thought the 527 dodge was going to only benefit themselves.
Now that they have found out we can play the game they want to hobble us some more.
One man, one plan, all about him. He is just an idiot.
McCain -Feingold , meeting to make a bad bill worse. Can they do it? They not only can they will. McCain is inept.
When he was in the service he was famous for crashing planes, When he arrived in Viet nam he crashed on his first time out. Now he is crashing in the Senate .
Gotta make it safe for hillary in 08.
Well, OK, where are both of them? Where's GWB?
GWB...hell! where's Frist or ANY of the party 'leaders' - McCain is delusional. If Gingrinch has any pretenstions to elevective office let him show some backbone and attack this inane idea.
The best improvement to McCain-Feingold would be to repeal the stupid & useless "I'm ******, and I approve this message"
Denny Crane: There are two places to find the truth. First God and then Fox News."
McCain is no true conservative but I do like the fact that he wants to get rid of the pork that all these jack a**es put in the budget year in and year out.....millions of dollars that no one seems to get too riled about
It was the 527's that made the election interesting. Otherwise, it was all staged propaganda.
