PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President returned after dark from Florida yesterday. It appears that he and First Lady are relaxing at the White House this weekend. This past week, in addition to the SOTU and other publicized events, the President spoke with several foreign leaders this week, including:
Secretary General de Hoop Scheffer to talk about the NATO training mission in Iraq.
Prime Minister Koizumi of Japan. This was a call the President initiated. They talked about the successful election in Iraq and the way forward. They also talked about the importance of moving forward on the six-party talks with North Korea. And they talked about ways to build upon what is already a strong relationship between the United States and Japan.
Prime Minister Howard of Australia. They talked about the successful election in Iraq and the way forward in Iraq. They also talked about their close cooperation on the tsunami relief efforts. And they discussed a range of other issues on the bilateral agenda.
President Basescu of Romania and Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg Gotha of Bulgaria. Both calls were to discuss the successful election in Iraq and the way forward in Iraq. The leaders talked about the importance of continuing to support the Iraqi people as they put the institutions in place for democracy to fully emerge in Iraq.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Monday, the President will meet with his Cabinet, the new Cabinet. Also on Monday, he will participate in a photo opportunity with the NASCAR 2004 Nextel Cup Champion.
Tuesday, the President speaks at the Detroit Economic Club. He will also speak to the Scholarly Committee of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, in the East Room.
Wednesday, the President meets with the President of Poland, in the Oval Office. He will then participate in a conversation on class action reform at the Department of Commerce.
Thursday will be a travel day. The details were not announced as of yesterday's press briefing.
Friday, the President will participate in the swearing-in ceremony for Secretary Leavitt at HHS. He will also make remarks at the White House performance of "Lincoln, Seen and Heard," in the East Room.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
Fixing Social Security will require an open, candid review of the options. I will listen to anyone who has a good idea to offer, and I will work with members of Congress to find the most effective combination of reforms. As we proceed, we will adhere to a few basic principles. We will make Social Security's finances permanently sound, not leave the task for another day. We will not increase payroll taxes. We will make the system a better deal for younger workers by allowing them to save some of their payroll taxes in voluntary personal retirement accounts -- a nest egg they can call their own, which government can never take away.

Our hero, President George Walker Bush.

A couple of great photos from the State of the Union address. These were taken from the center isle of the floor of the House chamber, and from directly in front of the desk.

The President returning to the White House last night after two days of campaign-style travel. At his last stop in Florida, the President had a great town-hall-style appearance. He took a number of questions from the audience. At the last question, he said he had to get back to Washington for dinner with the First Lady -- "...and I can't wait."

At the appearance in Tampa, FL, the President was relaxed, comfortable, conversational, charming, and seemed to be enjoying himself immensely. The audience reacted very warmly to him. At one point, in trying to answer a question from the audience about how his plan for Social Security reform would reduce the program's red ink, the President sort of got into a convoluted answer. Then he laughed at himself and tried again. He said, "Have you ever listened to one of my press conferences?!" The audience cracked up.

Listening to a question.

An Iraqi man reads a copy of the al-Shahed newspaper, carrying a front page referring to President Bush's second term in office and questioning if Iraqi Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi will also gain a second term.

Former President George H. W. Bush is to be awarded Estonia's highest state honor in recognition of his support in the 1990's for the Estonian independence movement.

In other news about GWB's dad, GHWB and former President Clinton are heading an official U.S. delegation to review the areas affected by the tsunami earlier this year.
ALL CLEAR. Please feel free to add other photos and images in keeping with the purpose of the Dose.
