(AP) - Legislators' libertarian leanings prevailed over pleas for highway safety Friday when a House of Delegates committee dealt with bills governing motorcyclists and red light scofflaws in Virginia.
The Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee rejected several bills to expand or continue local pilot programs that use cameras to catch red light runners. The panel also endorsed legislation allowing motorcyclists 21 and over to ride without a helmet.
The panel voted 15-6 to kill Del. Michelle McQuigg's bill expanding so-called "photo-red" monitoring systems statewide. Six northern Virginia localities and Virginia Beach have pilot programs that are scheduled to end July 1.

I have a big problem with being convicted and sentenced for a crime with no proof that I was even at the scene of the crime. City leaders come out with the "it's all for the common good" argument, when all they are worried about is the extra $$$ generated that they can share with their shady developer friends.
Why does the article say that "public safety suffered" a loss? I haven't seen a camera yet that stopped a speeding car or one that ran a red light. The stories about these things taking pictures of cars "clearing the intersection" on a left turn, and departments shortening yellows to make more money are legion.
Redlight running dope dealers and Democrats from the District of Columbia and Maryland make our roads particularly unsafe in Fairfax County.
The only way Morgan Griffith, chairman of that committee, could have arrived at the conclusion that we have to let those people run hoga$$ed wild thorugh our streets without penalty would be if he sold out to the union bosses and liberal pressure groups like NARAL, NEA, and NOW.
May he rot in Hell! And the same for all his liberalcompsymp running dog lackeys and syncophants.
The guvmint is only there to hep you.
Yes, with "public roads". Maybe it's time to abolish such things eh?
everything
safe
Big words for such a short thought process.

Michele B. McQuigg is deeply saddened.
Just another useless RINO getting a clue!
He needs to be investigated, prosecuted, convicted and sent to solitary confinement.
I have no idea about Griffin, but I have discussed red-light cameras with McQuigg.
She claims that red-light runners are "impatient". Ok, but why are they impatient? Perhaps, because of our terrible traffic congestion? And how did our traffic congestion get that terrible? It has something to do with the development policies that the Prince William County Board of Supervisors chose.
And who sat on the PWC Board of Supervisors? One Michele McQuigg. Even today, her solution to traffic problems is to add another traffic light. In places where they're NOT needed, except so someone can shave .5 mile of a trip going down the other way on a lightly-used side street.
As to your statement about dope dealers from DC and Maryland, I'm not sure where you're talking about, but here, the few times I've witnessed red-light running it's always been a vehicle with Virginia tags.
I also don't understand why a dope dealer would want to run red lights? If nothing else, that sort of driving attracts the attention you DON'T want when you have contraband in your vehicle.
BTW, the problem with traffic in PW county is the sad state of the drivers. You can see it in their eyes when they first start out in the morning ~ up too late, not enough sleep, a poor attitude toward paying enough taxes for the bonding to build the highways you all think you need. It's definitely a bunch of slackers down there just waiting for somebody else to pay their bills for them.
Our buddy Griffin who heads that committee just sold out the people of Virginia. Many will die on the public roads as a consequence of his uninformed attitude. We can only hope he's among the first eh?!
"It's definitely a bunch of slackers down there just waiting for somebody else to pay their bills for them."
Again, you have no idea what you're talking about. The property tax rate where I live is among the highest in the region, if not the state
By the way, how come your location says "Indiana"? That's a long way from Virginia..
By the way, if you think red light cameras will fix Fairfax County's problems, you're just out there.
"You can see it in their eyes when they first start out in the morning"
That I wouldn't know about. You see, I'm busy paying attention to the road and the vehicles around me, not other driver's eyes.
While in the Air Force, we used to run what was called "selective enforcement", that is, traffic radar. The entire difference back then ('80's) was you had to use your judgement, training and experience to first estimate that the operator was in fact speeding an how fast they were traveling. THEN you confirmed your estimate with the RADAR.
The RADAR was and still should be a tool to confirm or deny an officer's observations.
What a sight.
It's much easier to just catch the subway than to try to find a parking space in downtown DC.
Now, your proposal of having radar confirm and having an officer on the scene to identify the miscreant, around here that would involve putting an armed officer of the law on every street corner ~ kind of like Spain under Franco or Beijing under Mao.
You sure you think that's a good idea?
Doesn't sound like an extension of liberty at all.
HMMMM thats odd most people that get theses cams in dont say anything at all about making the streets safer
"Here in Springfield we all go out to the overpass carrying the Spfld.Bps. across I-95 and watch the PW drivers coming North."
You can spot a 2x2" sticker on the windshield and, from that distance, accurately identify what county it is from?
With such keen eyesight, I'm surprised you have such trouble identifying motorcycles in the vicinity of your vehicle.
"It's much easier to just catch the subway than to try to find a parking space in downtown DC."
You couldn't pay me to drive in that place. There's more reasons to use the subway than just lack of parking downtown.
By the way, since you mentioned taxation in one of your posts..DC gets back $3 for every $1 of federal gas tax they collect.
Virgina gets back 95 cents for every $1 of federal gas tax they collect.
