VANITY: Math class, 2005 style

Math class 2005 style

Subject: math class…

Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this?

Please read more about the "history of teaching math":

Teaching Math In 1950
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1990
By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living?
Topic for class participation after answering the question:
How did the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees? (There are no wrong answers.)

This would be funny if it weren't so true.

I completely agree. I'm sick and not supposed to stress my abdomen (doc's afraid I'll rupture the spleen) and I had to leave the room to stop my fit of laughter at reading this. Then I felt like crying because I worked retail for a few years and my boss would check me on a calculator when I did mental math like what's listed in the story.

Oh, man, that is beautiful---

and sooooooooooo true---

I feel sorry for the girl---she has been ripped off by the NEA. The education system needs to get back to basics, like reading, writing, and arithmetic. Also, HISTORY, geography and more history. I think they also need to teach fiscal responsibility.

Between what you just posted and the stories about Ward Churchill, I fear for the kids in the educational system right now.

It has been illegal to cut down trees in the forest since 1990. Lightning struck creating a forest fire that could not be contained, burned for a week, and destroyed the entire forest. The following month a heavy rain storm caused heavy flooding in the barren forest that wiped out a nearby community, killing 100 people.

How much should taxes be increased on rich people to pay to reforest the landscape and pay for home-owners to rebuild?

I love it when I have the right combination of change such that I can place several items on the counter next to the cash, mentally figured including the six percent state sales tax. The younger the clerk, the greater their shock and awe and "how did you do that!" comments.

Yes, this is real and not a joke. Even though I was not taught math well in the 70's, at least school was not yet so P.C. I can not tell you how many times I have also had to tell a checker how much change to give me! A few times I have given quick lessons in money counting.

Also, my dad was a logger. (I'm proud of it.) He worked the Canadian Rockies.

I fear for the kids in the educational system right now.

the entire purpose of public education is to teach people to be "obedient citizens" and not critical thinkers. Public education is a cancer on freedom. ALL public education should be privatized. Education is "just" another service, best left to the marketplace. It is sad, but a vast majority of people on the right believe that "public education" can be saved. They have no idea it's true purpose.

You know, Bush made the hugh mistake of succumbing to bi-partisanship and getting with Ted Kenney on the "No Child Left Behind" bill---

He was the Governor here in Texas and really tried to make the teachers and schools and parents accountable by stopping the "social promotion" that was going on. No one is supposed to be passed to the higher grade unless they are proficient in the lower grade's skills.

But, I think you have a terrific idea--if Bush really wants No child left behind, he would kick Kennedy and the National public school system to the curb, and have it all be a locally decided school system. Private or locally funded. Private prolly, but some small towns, cities could go to a public funded system.

It's the Marxist revolution plan. First, the students must learn to think politically correct in order to graduate. Academics aren't important because when sharing the wealth equally, a brain surgeon would earn the same wages as a janitor. It's the liberal utopia dreamed of by the far left. It's the dream of a great collective - a Borg nation. All will dress the same, think as they are ordered, live in small houses of the same color, and ride the same bikes. They will sleep when told to sleep. They will eat when told to eat. They will reproduce when ordered to reproduce - for the sake of the many.

My Father always does that LOL!!!

You would be surprised at how many of these people freeze and their eyes just seem to glaze over because they can't count back the change.

It's sad.

Last month I had a similar experience. My sister gave me a $50 gift certificate to a local market for Christmas. This market is somewhat pricey, and employs mostly local college students. I did my shopping, and went to the counter with my items.

As I presented the gift certificate and learned the precise total ($37.51), I had already figured the remaining balance on the gift certificate was $12.49...long before the college student/cashier was asking the girl at the next register if she could borrow her calculator. You see, the register would not make change for her due to my use of the gift certificate, and she couldn't do it on her own, or was not confident enough to try. How sad.

Exactly what is on the SAT these days? I know they "adjusted the scale" on it some years back to make students look more competent than they truly are. Then again, who needs math and science or logic for four years of liberal indoctrination?

I agree. I was totally disheartened when he first worked with Kennedy. I don't think Bush understood just how evil the left is. He was naive to think he could persuade them "to do the right thing." The left wants a socialist paradise with them running every aspect of our lives. As much as it seems we are winning, I believe the left still is way ahead. Government at all levels takes over half our income and I see NO government program being cut at any level. The results all indicate the left is way aways. We have the right ideas but they aren't making much headway in terms of getting government off our backs. The Dept of Education is a clear violation of the 10th Amendment, as is most other departments. Reagan is right, our children will fight the next revolution.

'No Child Left Behind' money now funds PBS cartoons like 'Postcards from Buster' where there is an episode of a trip to Vermont and celebrates gay marriage.

My granddaughter, Kailey is 5 and she watches PBS, but HATES that show---

I knew her parents and I were raising he right (in more ways than one). heehee

I have seen some commercials on the Nickolodean channel that make me want to gag--they have songs about tolerance and loving everyone just the way they are. Now for children with disabilitys and such, that is OKAY, but dang, when children's programming starts referring to sexual choices and such, that is WRONG---
