AMSTERDAM A Dutch pro-euthanasia group has launched an investigation into claims that doctors are trying to avoid performing requested euthanasia or are continually delaying carrying out the request.
The Dutch Voluntary End to Life Association (NVVE) said its large-scale investigation among surviving relatives into unperformed euthanasia requests, will be completed by the end of next year, newspaper De Volkskrant reported.
As the NVVE presented a book of interviews with surviving relatives on Thursday, director Rob Jonquière said many of the interviews indicate that doctors are looking for excuses not to carry out euthanasia. "We want to know how often this occurs," he said.
Research commissioned by the Dutch government has found that of the 9,700 requests for euthanasia lodged in 2001, only 3,800 were carried out. In one-third of the requests not carried out, doctors said the patient had already died before euthanasia could be performed.
In 20 percent of the cases, doctors were not prepared to assist a patient commit suicide because not all the legal requirements had been met.
The views of patients and relatives were not included in the research for two former studies and it remains unclear if the comments from doctors were correct. Jonquière said if doctors try and delay euthanasia, they would not be too keen to admit that to researchers.
The NVVE has asked a social medicine professor with the Free University medical centre in Amsterdam, Gerrit van der Waal to conduct the investigation. Van der Waal has in recent years led two investigations into the euthanasia practices among doctors.
Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands since April 2002. The law allows assisted suicides if the patient officially requests to die, is suffering from extreme pain or a terminal illness and a second medical opinion has been sought. The Netherlands was the first nation to legalise assisted suicides.
They might be able to enlist some Muslim doctors to assist with this "procedure".
(My apologies to all good & compassionate Muslim doctors everywhere.)
Couldn't they just get a second opinion?
Odds are that if you need the services of a physician in Nederland or Belgium you will probably get a doctor who has scragged one or more patients, and who probably likes to do so.
As I've noted many times before in these threads, it's a good idea to avoid visits to these countries, even in transit through an airport.
There's nothing to see there that you can't figure out from photographs and travel films.
The reality is that the death rate soars in socialized medicine hospitals in the Netherlands on Friday mornings, as less ethical government doctors kill off the really sick patients so they will not be bothered on their weekends off.
The dirty little secret of murdering sick patients, oops I meant "euthanasia," is that it is an incredible money saving strategy for the government.
Well isn't that just ducky? Why don't the legislators that passed that law be the ones that have to administer the killing medication? Just bring them in, one at a time, and say, "Here it is, call the coroner when you're through and I'm out of here, lawyer."
I have a real problem with requiring doctors to perform any particular procedure, especially one that they have major moral problems with.
That's one reason why the lieberals here are pushing for it....
That and also for the reason that it is grossly evil and immoral.
Democrats LOVE to promote ANYTHING evil and immoral.
I mean it. There is no depth to the democrat party's degeneracy.
no doctor should be forced to kill
That is like me with my tax return. Just keep putting it off ...
Now, we see the REAL agenda of the so-called 'right-to-die' movement.
Wait a minute, there are no "death sqauds" of any kind in the Netherlands. They don't execute convicted murders and other such scum. These liberals treat criminals and dogs better than their own people. Shameful.
"Oh, just hurry up and do it! Whatcha do, take an oath or something?"
Could there be a more twisted perversion of the doctors' mission -- You MUST kill the patient or else!
If Kerry had been elected, I'd say it's 100% certain that Catholic hospitals here would have been forced to provide "abortion care" or else turn their facilities over to the state. These people wail and moan about how the evil rightists disrespect them, but in fact they are so close to achieving their goals that it is terrifying.
Exactly.
They cannot be forced to kill. Noone can force you to kill. You simply quit. You just quit. That is what a good doctor does. He doesn't evade, get a second opinion, equivocate, procrastinate. He/she just says no. Anything else is a violation of medicines first law,,do no harm.
Here's one: The Hiipocratic Oath: #3 "Physican, do no harm". Minor "excuse".
Same goes for Florida.
