'Celebrity Backlash' Helped Re-Elect Bush, Actor Says
CNS News ^ | 2-3-05 | Marc Morano

Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - Stage and screen actor Ron Silver, in Washington for President Bush's State of the Union address Wednesday night, credited left-wing celebrities -- particularly filmmaker Michael Moore -- with helping to re-elect George W. Bush.

"The celebrity backlash helped," Silver said. "Michael Moore, I think, was a big factor --a really big factor," Silver told Cybercast News Service in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, following Bush's speech.

Silver's acting credits include the television series "The West Wing," and "Chicago Hope" as well as the movie "Reversal of Fortune." He also is a co-founder of the Creative Coalition, a social and political advocacy organization of the (generally liberal) entertainment industry, and he has stood out in Hollywood for supporting the war in Iraq.

"The attention paid to [Moore] -- the lionization of his piece of propaganda (the anti-Bush movie "Fahrenheit 911") -- I think it all kind of backfired," Silver said.

Silver, a former Democrat, was responding to a question about a billboard campaign in Hollywood sponsored by the conservative group Citizens United that is thanking celebrities for helping to re-elect Bush.

One billboard displays an image of President Bush juxtaposed against the images of several celebrities, including Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Barbra Streisand with the text: "4 More Years. Thank You Hollywood!"

And now these same celebrities are crying their illegal nannies and limo drivers need licenses. What better way to get the real reform we need than to have whining, spoiled Hollywood brats come out in opposition to it.

Interesting..all donations before 2001. I think Ron Silver has had an amazing epiphany, one similar to my own, about the left and Democrats in generals. I would be willing to bet he hasn't given a red cent to the Dems since 9/11. Some of us didn't see the light until we were bashed in the face with our own Manhattan skyline. We were wrong then. But don't push us away because we once shared a wrong-headed philosophy, which has now degenerated into idiocy. I think Ron Silver is a great guy, and like Dennis Miller, his career has suffered for his turn to the right. But the right has all the moral clarity--the left has none.

After 9-11, I had to decide which was more important to me, country or party, my country won hands down.

We all do dumb things, especially when liberal. Gore not winning in 2000 never bothered me once. The next morning when Bush was announced the winner, I put it behind me and moved on.

Since 9-11, I'm Republican, conservative, and a hell of a lot happier.

I know you're not flaming me. I put my being an ex-dim on my profile page. That way, everyone knows I'm up front.

I've been Baptized in fire.

"I want my celebrities on the screen, blowing up sh!t if they are male and wearing as little as possible (if they are comely enough) if they are female. If they want to be subtle in their political leanings that is okay also, no matter what side they are on.
Ben Affleck is a good example. He spoke his views on issues he believed in, quoted a few facts and stayed away from hard rhetoric.
I can respect that, I support a couple of "non-conservative" view points myself.

But when it gets to loud, hateful and irrespectful, I tune that out."

BINGO! Well said! BRAVO!

Agree with your post completely. One note: I read Dershowitz's book "A Case for Israel" and it was a pretty good read. And he has been getting death threats from the islamonazis and wingnut left because of it. Interesting.

Silver calls himself a 9-11 Democrat, like Dennis Miller, like Ed Koch, who threw their support to Bush after 9-11

I don't know if Miller was ever a card carrying Democrat

keep in mind as well that being a conservative in Hollywood is like being a leper, unless you are Mel Gibson and don't give a fuck because you are worth 500 million bucks or so

Alec Baldwin's brother Steven (?), one of the brothers anyhoo, is also a GOP supporting born again Christian, wow a double strike against you and the poor guy ain't much of an actor to start

but must be fun at Baldwin family holidays.........

and then think who are the conservative leaning actors

Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, and of course Ahnald.......

B. Can you, in any way, explain to me how you could vote for Gore? I find it incomprehensible that any rational person would.

Sorry, I forget to answer your question.

As a Democrat, you are not expected too or encouraged to think for yourself. The party does all your thinking....you do all the voting. Challenging their ideology is not acceptable.

Until you learn to not let them spoon feed you....you do what they want.

9-11 woke a lot of us up. We started asking questions.

I voted for Gore. I will tell you why, if you want to know. I was a stupid, blind liberal who was convinced the Republicans were going to ruin the country.

Then my country was attacked on 9/11, and it was made all too clear to me that the Democrats and the left, who cozied up to the islamonazis, were the ones who were going to ruin the country.

Thank God for George W. Bush. Better late than never!

There are more of us than the Democrats want to admit. 7, in my immediate family alone.

It does feel nice not to be alone.

In the week before the GOP convention, Silver was a guest on Hannity and Colmes. He reiterated, at that time, that he is a liberal. He spoke passionately about his support of our President and his administration's handling of the WoT. He also mentioned that he is passionate about a woman's "right to choose." IIRC, he went on to briefly discuss a few other of his favorite liberal causes.

Even if he is still a liberal, even if he is still a democrat, I have a lot of respect for the guy for voicing what is an unpopular opinion in Hollyweird: that President Bush is right in his handling of the fight against terrorism.

I don't think so anymore. I heard him on Prager around the election and Dennis called him a former Democrat and, while Silver used to say he still was a democrat, he no longer does. It was a process.

no need to apologize for being a Democrat in a former life

although I have conservative parents, in the political sense, even I was more liberal in my naive youth, because you are idealistic at that age, and part of growing up is challenging your parents viewpoints, and let's face it, besides my parents, all other influences are liberal or left leaning esp in Canada except I went to a university that is less liberal (it's forte was its business program or training those evil captains of industries) or I realize it now in retrospect that it is or was less liberal than the norm and the law school which I attended had many grounded in reality professors, because many of them also worked part time in the outside real world, as practicing lawyers, arbitrators and corporate consultants ( of course I went to school when Conservatives were in power too)

but the older you get, the more you understand the way the world really works

Interesting indeed. Though usually a Demorat shill (and I can never forgive him for his service on O.J. Simpsons "Dream Team"), Dershowitz has shown the ability to use his mind for good from time to time, and his support for Israel is brave, strong and consistant. If you do a search here on FR for his last name, you can come up with a very well-written and intelligent article he wrote a few months back that perfectly nailed the entire dark history of the deceased terrorist Yassir Arafat.

Me too. I'm very proud to be a Republican.

By their thinking, we 9-11 Republicans are traitors to our country. The idiots just don't get it. 'THEY', are the traitors.
