CNN) -- President Bush's State of the Union address raised support for his policies on health care and Social Security among people who watched the speech, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Wednesday night.
The percentage of respondents who said the president's proposals in those areas will help the country rose 15 points from when the same question was asked of the same people in the two days before the speech.
In the post-speech sample, 70 percent of respondents said Bush's policies on health care were positive, while 66 percent approved of the president's plan for Social Security.
Bush showed almost as much improvement on Iraq, with 78 percent of respondents saying U.S. policy there is heading in the right direction, a 12 percentage point increase over pre-speech polling. Overall, 77 percent of respondents said Bush is taking the country in the right direction after the speech compared to 67 percent beforehand.

Overall, Bush got very positive or positive reactions to his speech from 86 percent of respondents, his best numbers since the State of the Union address he gave January 29, 2002 -- just four-and-a-half months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 -- when 94 percent of those polled gave him positive marks.

Yeah, I didn't think this was a great speech and Bush isn't a great speaker, BUT...
People believe him.
People know he doesn't promise a lot of crap he won't really work on.
People listened to this speech and learned from his reasonable and clear explanation of Social Security's woes and what he was going to do about it. That was the cornerstone of the speech and the best part of it.
He sold his SS fix tonight.
I guess we just escape the polls. Sigh.
The omissions where interesting: No Iran or Korea, no talk about Free/Fair trade - particularly the Chinese or EU problems- nothing about NASA or Science funding (excluding energy policy in the area of S & T,) and no discussions about military "transformation" or long range procurement impacts. I am not suggesting that he was dodging issues here. It seems more likely that he wants to focus on some main domestic issues and even here focus on one primary issue: Social Security. I imagine that every year will be similar on the domestic front, and that he will refocus every year on one of his main reform goals (ie. tort reform, regulatory reform, etc.) It would seem to show political maturity.
I have to laugh how he has manipulated the Dems into spending/program "cuts" by letting them drone on and on about "twin deficits" for a year and a half. He does this sort of thing over and over again. Clearly, the Dems are playing checkers while he is playing chess. Too funny.

Personally, I thought the speech might have surpassed dear Pres. Reagan's great addresses simply because it had so much real substance.
The speech was briliant politically because it forced the Dims to sit on their hands when the President said he wanted the younger generation to be able to control their own retirement funds. These will be the voters for the next 50 years, and the Dims insulted them...really, really DUMB!

Get ready for a scandal. The RATS have been backed into a corner and are going to come out fighting. Think it will be something with Oil for Food. Maybe Bush knew and did nothing. They won't even mention that it was under Clintoon that this all started.
