Germany's unemployment figure rose above the psychologically important level of five million last month.

On Wednesday, the German Federal Labour Agency said the jobless total had reached 5.037 million in January, which takes the jobless rate to 12.1%.

"Yes, we have effectively more than five million people unemployed," a government minister said earlier on ZDF public television.

Unemployment has not been this high in Germany since the 1930s.

I read another article on the high unemployment rate in Germany and Europe (as a whole). It was funny because the author said that things are just as bad in the United States.

Well lets see: U.S. unemployment isn't close to 12% and our economy hasn't been flatlined for 3 years. But I'm sure that his article must have made a few Europeans feel that they weren't alone.

It won't get better with the Euro inflating so fast. In fact, U.S. manufactures are already starting to see a shift in the steel industry because of the exchange rate between the dollar and euro.

there are a further 1.5 million-2 million people on subsidised employment schemes who are, in fact, looking for real jobs.

I do not believe that those people are actually counted in the 12%. A European I know explained that that in France, Germany and others the true unemployment rate would be 20% but for the government "make-work" programs taking them off the officially "unemployed" statistics.

What they have failed to mention is that these same 5 million people Do Not Wish To Be Employed.

Todays young German (along with some older ones) believe cradle-to-grave Government hand-outs is their right.

Kind of like our illegal Mexicans, they dont really want to work, they want US to support them, and guess what? We'll have the same problem as Germany if this keeps up.

According to the Heritage Economic Freedom chart. Germany is listed at number 17 and France is listed as 44th. That should tell you something.

So add the 5 million to the 2 million, and you've got 7 million. Don't stop now, Germany! If you try, you can catch us on total unemployed! (US total unemployment in Dec 2004 was 8 million, and needless to say our trendlines are good.)

And they are with striking distance of us on total unemployed even though we have over three times their population.

Some of them already have. My nieces's (former)boyfriend moved here straight from Germany. He actually thought it was up to HER family to take care of HIM during his frequent bouts of unemployment! He could not/would not keep a job, because he did not like waking up so early, He had SOCIALIST written all over him, sorry POS!

After WWII, when Germany adopted the US free Market economical system they flourished very well and there were to build the third largest economy in the world after the US and Japan. However, in the last 15 years the Germans have adopted the European socialist economical system (French system) and they are paying dearly for it.
