Web Site Claims GI Captured in Iraq
My Way News ^ | February 1, 2005 | ROBERT H. REID

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqi militants claimed in a Web statement Tuesday to have taken an American soldier hostage and threatened to behead him in 72 hours unless the Americans release Iraqi prisoners.

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what appeared to be an American soldier in desert fatigues seated with his hands tied behind his back.

A gun barrel was pointed at his head, and he is seated in front of a black banner emblazoned with the Islamic profession of faith, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet."

A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, Marine Sgt. Salju K. Thomas, said he had no information on the claim but "we are currently looking into it."

A statement posted with the picture suggested the group was holding other soldiers.

"Our mujahadeen heroes of Iraq's Jihadi Battalion were able to capture American military man John Adam after killing a number of his comrades and capturing the rest," said the statement, signed by the "Mujahedeen Brigades."

"God willing, we will behead him if our female and male prisoners are not released from U.S. prisons within the maximum period of 72 hours from the time this statement has been released," the statement said.

The claim, carried on the Web site ansarnet.ws, could not be verified.

More than 180 foreigners have been kidnapped in the past year. At least 10 of them, including three American civilians, remain in the hands of their kidnappers.

The only American soldier known to have been taken hostage is Pfc. Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, who was shown in a video in April being held by militants. Another video aired in June showed what purported to be Maupin's slaying, but the picture was too unclear to confirm it was him and the military still lists him as missing.

Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun went missing in Iraq in June and later photos surfaced on Arab television showing him blindfolded with a sword to his head. In July he made his way to the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. Back in the United States, he said he had been captured, but in December he was charged with desertion for the incident.

I have just returned from Toys R Us. Thanks to your picture I couldn't stop giggling the whole time I was in the toy store. My first grader kept asking me what's so funny about elmo.

BTW, I got another mention on the Kimmer show for emailing them the photos. Thanks Kimmer.

and that seems unusual that a captured soldier would be permitted to keep ANY equipment.

great observation!

Evil Bert has not yet been apprehended, but he is wanted for questioning.

In this rarely seen photo, we see Bert standing in the side lines a few seconds before the assassination of John F. Kennedy. We have sources who claim that Lee Harvey Oswald and Bert were friends in Korea. Though no proof directly points to Bert's involvement in this ghastly shard of history... we wouldn't be too surprised if he was.

I showed my 14 year old son the picture telling him that an other American soldier has been captured in Iraq by insurgents.

His comments...Mom that picture is a fake. Nobody has hair like that and the gun is to small, also nobody holds a gun like that. When I told him the whole story and how it had fooled news agencies this afternoon he just shook his head and said "proof that adults are stupid" as he calmly walked out the door.....before I could throw something at him.

LOL! This has been a fun day.

^5 Blackrain. Great Find! Thanks for bringing it to us.

I wonder a couple of things.

Who did this and why?

I am glad they did because it for one humiliates the terrorists and boost spirits among the good guys.

It harms the MSM, whats left of it anyway. It will also make them check twice in the future. (or should)

Surely the bad guys didnt expect this to weather the scrutiny..so that leaves me with a Republican. Maybe a FReeper who knew it would smack a double wammy on both the MSM and Terrorists image if it slipped by.

Once the pic of "Cody" was out, Im pretty sure military families knew it wasnt one of theirs. heheh

This thread has made my sides hurt from laughing. I bet you have 1000 pings today!

Brit Hume just stated the headlines, one of which was:

Why was the MSM so willing to run with this story? Where are their fast-checkers?

Ooppss...I forgot. They side with America's enemies and accept the tales of terrorists without question. These are the same self-labeled professionals who see Abu Gharib as more heinous than Saddam. Losers one and all.
