Paul Berman is a contributing editor of The New Republic and the author of A Tale of Two Utopias: The Political Journey of the Generation of 1968.

Must be a member of the Progressive Commies.

HMMMmMMM!

Bush is an idiot, but he was right about Saddam

Well now what to think about Berman?

Wonder if Horowicz mentions him in his book, "Unholy Alliance"?

***********************************************************

Unholy Alliance
by David Horowitz
Regnery Publishing, Inc.; ISBN: 089526076X
Hardcover - 256 pages (September 2004)

In this tour de force on the most important issue of our time, David Horowitz, confronts the paradox of how so many Americans, including the leadership of the Democratic Party, could turn against the War on Terror. He finds an answer in a political Left that shares a view of America as the “Great Satan” with America’s radical Islamic enemies. This Left, which once made common cause with Communists, has now joined forces with radical Islam in attacking America’s defenses at home and its policies abroad. From their positions of influence in the university and media culture, leftists have defined America as the “root cause” of the attacks against it. In a remarkable exploration of the “Mind of the Left,” Horowitz traces the evolution of American radicalism from its Communist past to its “anti-war” present. He then shows how this Left was able to turn the Democratic Party presidential campaign around and reshape its views on the War on Terror.

Horowitz’s Unholy Alliance, writes John Haynes, the noted historian of American Communism, “is an insightful, brilliant examination of the mental world of the radical left. Horowitz shows how today’s radicals, unwilling to reflect on the internal flaws that destroyed Marxism-Leninism from within, have embraced an all-consuming nihilism in its place. This has led them to a hatred of American institutions and a solidarity with Islamic terrorists that makes the radical left more properly regarded as dangerous than loony.”

Unholy Alliance is an eye-opening book that should unsettle conventional assumptions and reveals why intellectuals and political leaders who applaud Michael Moore are no laughing matter. As Harvey Klehr, author of Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America, writes, “The world Communist movement may be moribund, but its habits of mind and ideological fantasies have not disappeared. This is a fascinating and depressing account.”

Self righteous Europe has difficulty with the concept of freedom.

More of a "democratic socialist", along the lines of the late Irving Howe.

Unfortunately, he has never progressed beyond the initial skepticism voiced against leftist shibboleths, to embrace the philosophy adopted by former fellow travelers such as Peter Collier, Ron Radosh, and the man at the epicenter of contemporary intellectual conservatism, David Horowitz.

Still, he is a brilliant writer and a relatively competent scholar.

"Terror and Liberalism", aside from a few reflexive cheap shots against the incumbent president, is overall, a magnificent analysis of the European-inflicted, nihilistic political movements that have infected the "religion of peace", slowly transforming it into a death cult.

Along with "Civilization and its Enemies", it was the first comprehensive diagnosis of the existential threat posed by radical Islam to our civilization, which was published in the immediate aftermath of the September 11th attacks.

Paul Berman was an anarchist, but of the peaceful sort. Was a rare anti-Stalinst figure on the left in the 70s-80s.

Met him a couple of times. Nice guy, though painfully naive.

I used to read Berman in the Voice many years ago. Wrote a brilliant piece on conditions in Nicaragua that fairly much predicted the Sandinista's defeat in the elections later that year. He also did a cool piece on the first leader of the CPUSA, who was in his 90s at the time he interviewed him. Incredible writer and a thoughtful critic.

Mmm, that was excellent but you probably shouldn't ping me along on posts NoPardons and Howlin frequent. They have deemed me anti-Republican so it must be true. I have the temerity of asking why America's back door remains open for the sake of cheap labor while any terrorist with half a brain would and will take advantage of it.

Never mind that I was a literal cold-warrior on hot missions during the Reagan years. Their current opinions are far more important than my past service fighting Communism.
