Embattled University of Colorado ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill today released a lengthy statement defending his controversial essay concerning the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Also, today, he resigned his post of chairman of the ethnic studies program but not his professorship because he did not want the attention focused on him to reflect on fellow department members.
Churchill has been in the eye of a media hurricane since last week when students and 9/11 victims' family members began to protest his scheduled Thursday appearance on a panel at Hamilton College, in Clinton, N.Y. Churchill had triggered angry reactions in many quarters with his argument that American foreign policy, including support for U.N. sanctions of Iraq following the first Gulf War, had done much to provoke the terrorists' actions.
In his statement released Monday, Churchill protested what he called "grossly inaccurate media coverage," which had "resulted in defamation of my character and threats against my life. What I actually said has been lost, indeed turned into the opposite of itself," Churchill stated.
The essay, On the Justice of Roosting Chickens, wasintended to make the point "that we cannot allow the U.S. government, acting in our name, to engage in massive violations of international law and fundamental human rights and not expect to reap the consequences."
Denying that he is a "defender" of the September 11 attacks, Churchill said, he had simply been "pointing out that if U.S. foreign policy results in massive death and destruction abroad, we cannot feign innocence when some of that destruction is returned.
"I have never said that people "should" engage in armed attacks on the United States, but that such attacks are a natural and unavoidable consequence of unlawful U.S. policy. As Martin Luther King, quoting Robert F. Kennedy, said, 'Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable'."
This hack deserves to lose his job over this. Not just his meaningless "chair".
I'm so effing SICK over academic elites giving moral equivalency to 5th century animals that would rather deal in blood and mass murder than meaningful education and betterment of their backwards-ass societies.
Why anyone takes the humanities seriously anymore, I'll never know.
scarborough is discussing this right now.
heads up! on PMSNBC!
Note also at CU School of Arts and Sciences most chairmanships are passed around a department, each full professor gets his turn. It is mostly a title and does not entail any real power or managerial responsibility. It is no particular honor. If their is a pay difference it is trivial. So he really gave up nothing.
FR can take a bow for helping publicize this jackass's outrageous comments.
From this interview. Here is a bit that makes sense:
You can gauge the effectivenessreal or potential at leastof any line of activity by the degree of severity of repression visited upon it by the state. It responds harshly to those things it sees as, at least incipiently, destabilizing.
So Peace had Come & the setting Sun,
To lovely Forrest Glade,
And of the Redskins there was none
For History had been made.
Tully Crow
More likely the reason they cancelled is a ton of people who donate to the school threatened to pull out their money.
Which is how Free Speech is supposed to work! Free speech counters free speech.
The 1st Amendment strikes again. The 1st Amendment is beautiful.
Yup. Guess you call that voting with your pocketbook.
Yep, that's really him.
"Does this guy have any loved ones, or property?"
Probably not. But if he does, I wouldn't feel badly if he lost it all. After all, and I'm sure he would agree, he would just be reaping what he has sown.
I hope he gets split ends. Dirty hippie.
$20 says this is one of those lefties who freaks out and berates the $2.50 an hour waitress if he doesn't get exactly what he wants when he wants it.
Colorado is getting hit hard by alums over this.
Go CU College Republicans - they're keeping the pressure on.
CU Alums (myself included) are NOT happy, and I would imagine CU will suffer financially if he is kept around (not that I contribute anyways - have you ever been to Boulder? 'Nuff said...plus I transferred to a less liberal school - smartest move I ever made).
Hmmmm...
The guy facies himself as a violent anarchist who will tear down borders and bring self-rule.
In the recent reporting, it's never mentioned - - or is it? I haven't seen anyway -- that this Churchill character is a big leader in the American Indian movement.

Look you stupid idiot: When you say we are to blame for the attack, you may not be saying you support the terrorists. But, you can't talk about us as if we are guilty and actually expect people to support you. There is only a minor distinction, not a major difference between you supporting the terrorists and just saying we are partially to blame. After all, by saying we are partially to blame due to our policies, you are expressing sympathy for the terrorists and partially validating their actions.
I e-mailed him this.....I was much more tactful in my e-mail:
"Sir,
I am appalled by what you have said regarding 9/11.
I also read your statement on your site. I believe that every story has two sides.
However, when I read your response, it was less than convincing. Your word choice was very poor in your piece. And frankly, based on your previous writings, on marxism and the like, I wonder just how much sympathy you actually do give to the terrorists, contrary to your protestations.
There is no major difference, only a difference in slight distinction, between actually supporting the terrorists and giving their actions legitimacy by attacking the victims of their attacks and saying the policy of the United States brought the attacks on itself.
You do not seem to understand this. I have called your college and demanded you be fired immediately."
contact the regents as soon as you can...they meet THURSDAY to determine his fate..if he will stay as a faculty member at all.
