The NAACP, the nation's oldest civil rights organization, is refusing to cooperate with an IRS investigation into whether its chairman made an improper political speech, charging that the timing of the probe was itself politically motivated.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said in October that the group's tax-exempt status was under review after its chairman, Julian Bond, gave a speech that criticized President Bush.
In a letter to the IRS on Thursday, NAACP attorneys said the group will not hand over documents requested in the probe and argued that the IRS followed improper procedure by launching its exam before the group filed its 2004 tax return.

So true. That's why it's so important for the IRS to pursue this investigation as aggessively as possible. It could have an impact far beyond the NAACP, particularly on the businesses JJ has been shaking down for so long and, in turn, on JJ's income.
This is a great giggle!
Let's hope the IRS does its usual zealousness in this case agaisnt the NAACP.
Actually, I have very mixed feelings about all of this.
The Clintons used the IRS to audit almost every conservative organization in the country during their reign of terror.
I don't want to see that happen from our side, and I have no evidence that that has been the case.
In fact, I support and end to the IRS and its meddling in the affairs of the church and all charitable groups.
But fraud statutes would still stand, and what I'm saying doesn't change the fact that Jackson et al have abused the law and run protection rackets, literally, using the tax code as a cover.
"The NAACP insists that the timing of the investigation is politically motivated."
But I suppose Bond's speech wasn't politically motivated?
Wish I could take credit for it but I can't. That is the talent of FR's "registered".
